Divorce was very very very rare in the olden days. It was still rare when it comes to the late 1960s, but people found it an easier way until life drifted into the 1970s when the divorce rate increased bit by bit. To divorce, you had to prove a lot and it was a lot of hassle. People found bigamy easier, even though it was a criminal offence/illegal.

Hi there,

Divorce in 1939 was very rare, only for wealthy people. Those who are less well off may have had funds. You can try contacting the High Court of Justice, where the majority of divorces took place. You could only get a divorce if you could prove your spouse was guilty of some matrimonial offence.

Kind regards,
Craig.
