Well, I have reached the point of insanity. I have traced back my great-great grandfather Nathaniel Rountree (b. 1822 - d. Abt 1866) to his father William Rountree (b. 1789) all of Nansemond County Va, using the Census. I have found a William Rountree in Nansemond County in 1789 on the tax Roll, and as he was the only Rountree listed, and since the family held the same lad for generations, I am assuming this is probably William's father. The first Rountree on record in Nasemond County is Frances Rountree, who indeed had a son William. Frances was born abt 1676. Now here is where the confusion begins. In the family trees at Ancestry.com, Frances is listed as having been born in multiple places and died in multiple places, all in areas around Gates Co. Va ( a mile from the ancestral home) and Nansemond Co. where he lived and most likely died. Does anyone have any real research on the Frances Rountree that patented land in Nansemond Co? I believe he came from Ireland, but his ancestry is originally English, although it may have been several generations back. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

David Rountree

My ggrandfather, Benjamin Franklin Linton (1/26/1830-1/16/1883) born Gadsen Co, Ga, d. Monticello, Fla, married Rebecca Roun(d)tree on 12/5/1849.(b. about 1831, d. 2/11/1896) b. Loundes co, Ga, d. Monticello, Fla. Her father was Francis Roun(d)tree who married Rebecca Colson.I think he was born in what is now Burke Co, Ga.& died in 1860 in
Taylor Co, Fla.They had 5 sons & 2 dau. I don't know if it is the same family, but being as there wasn't a giant population yet, it's possible they are of the same family origins.Quite a few families in Ga & the Carolinas, moved to the Florida territory after the Indian Wars to claim land. They had lotteries back then. (After Osceola). Check your southern histories for time tables. It helps to get an idea of what was going on in the area at the time period you are looking into.

Thanks Nancy, the relation is probably distant, if at all. My family came to Nansemond County and stayed. Some were caught in NC in Gates County when the NC line was moved north in 1729. Still, my branch remained in Va, about a mile north of the line. Others found themselves in Gates Co. NC practically overnight.

David,

As you have traced your ancestry back to Moses (b. 1549), could you please let me and other family members know the original sources on which the information is based?

Also, we would also like to know the original source that says that Dorcus was from the Dudley family?

Thank you in advance,

Fred

Hi. I've worked on genealogy for the Roundtree family for many years. My paternal grandmother was a Roundtree. We all live in Schriever/Thibodaux, LA area. Elisha had 2 children - Nancy and William. I descend from William. Nancy married a man named Charles Hawley and they moved to Louisville, KY with their children and possibly her mother Charlotte. Poor Elisha was killed in Texas. He supposedly was robbed and shot. They did bring his body back to Terrebonne Parish and buried him. Then them moved. William remained in the area. A man named John Guyot Smith in NY wrote the most interesting story on Elisha and his brother. Told the story of his life in Natchez and Terrebonne parish. I have one great uncle Roundtree left living - Hale Roundtree. My grandmother June died in 2006. Her father was Joseph Roundtree married to Cecil Roundtree. His father was Sam. Sam's father was William. The old Roundtree house was torn down, but the property all still remains in the family. Please contact me if you have any questions. My grandmother's brother was Alton Roundtree. He was once the mayor of Thibodaux.
