I'd like to hear from anyone who is working of the parents
of the Reverend John Gibbs of Burke County (1755-1847).

Also I'm looking for the parent of Rebecca Mashburn who
married James Gibbs on April 14, 1823. I estimate she
was born about 1804.

James was married once before to a Mary Ann Hunter, I was told. He also had a son who went to north Georgia. As far as I know no one has found Rev. John's parents. James had 6 children by his first wife; 5 girls and one boy and he had 10 by Rebecca. Hope this helps. For now. Carolyn

I am trying to piece together a complete list of the family of James Gibbs (abt 1780-aft 1860).
He married Rebecca Mashbourn (1805-aft 1860) in 1823 and I have the following children for them
from the 1850 census of Yancey Co., NC, p. 389:

Sarah A. Gibbs, b. abt 1826
Thomas R. Gibbs, b. abt 1829
Rebecca S. Gibbs, b. abt 1830
Lois E. Gibbs, b. abt 1832
William F. Gibbs, b. abt 1834
Nancy E. Gibbs, b. abt 1837
Bridget E. Gibbs, b. abt 1839
Martha J. Gibbs, b. abt 1842
Joshua M. Gibbs, b. abt 1844
Harvey J. Gibbs, b. abt 1845

In this census on p. 382, there is also another Gibbs whom I believe is also a son:

James W. Gibbs, b. abt 1828
(Probable birthdate = Nov. 26, 1827)

From James' census listings in Burke Co. in earlier years, I believe he was married before he married Rebecca.
In 1810, he is shown with 1 male, aged 0-10 and a woman I believe was a first wife.
In 1820, he has 1 male and 5 females, aged 1-10, but no wife.
I have seen mention, both on this forum and from another correspondent, that James' first wife was
a Mary Ann Hunter. Can anyone give me more details here? Also, who were their children?

Recently, I have found James and Rebecca Gibbs in the 1860 census for Cherokee Co., GA, p. 784:

Gibbs, James 79 Laborer born NC
" Rebecca 56 " "
" Sarah 32 " "
" Martha 18 " "
" Joshua 16 " " "
" Henry 14 " "

Next to them is a John Gibbs. Is he the son of James and Mary Ann?

Gibbs, John 48 Farmer born NC
" Eliza A. 37 born SC
" Robert E. 16 " born GA
" John W. 11 " "
" Wm W. 8 " "
" Henry P. 6 " "

Also, in 1850, this John Gibbs is listed in Cherokee Co., GA, p. 475

Gibbs, John 38 farmer born NC
" Eliza A. 27 born SC
" Robert D. 6 born GA
" John W. 2 " "
" Mathew M. 26 born NC

Is the Mathew Gibbs here a younger half brother of John, i.e., an oldest son
of James and Rebecca, b. abt 1824? Both Mathew and a known son of James',
Thomas P. Gibbs, are also in the 1860 Cherokee Co., GA census.

Any help with these families would be greatly appreciated.
They are a collateral line, as I am descended from James'
brother, William Gibbs (1779-1850), who helpfully married once
and stayed in one place his entire life!

Dear Patricia,
Have you had any luck? My grandfather was Thomas Robert Gibbs from Hall County. My Ggrandfather was William Gibbs. I am trying to figure out if James Gibb's son John was the dad or Cornelius Gibbs. They are shown together on the 1850 census in White County(which is part of Cherokee County and Habersham). My Ggrandfather named his son's Thomas Robert, William and John, some of the family names. William Gibbs was born around 1850 in Habershame County. It is very confusing. His wife was Elizabeth Evans McClure. I keep finding names from Hyde County in Habersham. I saw where a Robert and Joel Gibbs were married in Habersham but disappeared in the next census.

I talked to you about 12 years ago. I hope this address is still good. My private email is Please contact me. I was researching the James Gibbs line at that time, was told I was looking in the wrong place, so stopped.

Through the Gibbs Project DNA that you talked about back then, I have found yes this is my line. We are "0 distance " from Rev John. Which means he or one of his brothers is my line.

I would loved to talk with you. I still have all the information you shared with me back then.. I felt all along it was the correct line and would not dispose of it.

Look forward to hearing from you

Oops. Sorry I'm just now seeing your post. I have not worked on family genealogy in a while.
Hope you are still working on the Gibbs/Mashburn trees. Would love to pick up on hunting family
members. Are you still researching? Betty Butler Babovec
