Goodnight family history tidbit
Hi my dad is a history buff and shortly after getting married he showed me and my husband a Ky history book, the guy responsible for the goodnight-lovinf trail fathered like 22 children, between 3 different wives. WOW is all I can say.
There is a tiny town in Ky named Goodnight, Ky. Just thought this was interesting enough to post. But then again u probably have heard all this before right?
Like the "oh what a cute last name" bit?
Well thanks for listening and happy hunting,
Two books we have used on the Goodnight family are The Good(k)night(Gutknecht)Family in America by S.H.Goodnight avialable via ILL at your library and a microfilm of the Gen. Soc. of Utah by wilbur H Eskite. We used one other but have lost the title page with author. Perhaps these will help.
We did find info in artiles such as obits and reference to family letters stating that H.Michael had a older son Christopher who was replaced by a younger son Christian in the Rev. War and fought with Gen. Geo. Washington at Valley Forge. Jacob son of Christian moved to Indiana with son of William (child) who fathered John Thomas and Robert. John Thomas is my husbands Grandfather. Would love to hear from those with IN ties and like info on this branch. Several other IN Goodnights but I'm not sure on any connection.
I switched Christian and Christopher. Christopher is the father of Jacob and served for his older brother,Christian, in the Rev.War. Christopher was born about 1762 and Christian in 1754. My husbands uncle, Rev. Cloyd Goodnight, is quoted as saying Michael came to America about 1708 while young with a brother Abraham and a party of Baptist refugees. I have found the 3 coming in the mid1700s but haven't the 1708 date.
Charles Goodnight''s wives
My grandfather was John Howard Goodnight,
descended from Hans Micheal. I was raised
by my grandparents in Pittsburgh, PA. I
was always told I was part Indian because
of Charles Goodnight's having married an
Indian. My grandfather beleived he was
a great-grandson of Charles brother, Elijah.
Anyway, that doesn't make me an Indian, and
since we are far removed from Elijah, I can't
claim the Indian hertiage. Do you know if
one of Charles wives was Indian? We were
told he had an Indian son that was killed by
the other clan of Goodnight children in NC.
Supposedly that was the last they saw of
Charles. I always thought that story was
a crock, but it must have started somewhere.
Let me know if any of this sounds familiar.
Elija Goodnight was my Great Grandfather and his daughter, Althea was my Grandmother. I would appreciate photos of either or both. Elija is buried at the Concord Cemetery close to Waco, Texas.
Goodnights from Indiana and books
My husband is descended from H. Michael. Jim was born in Indiana. There is a book that I have not been able to locate on the Goodnight family, but it is in the Library of Congress. Desc. of Caleb M. B. Goodnight by Winecoff and Basinger. I was very interested to hear about your book and will have to loan it. H. Michael's daughter Rachel married Jacob Young. Their daughter Sarah Goodnight Young married Joseph Waskom. Their son Harrison's daughter Zella was my husbands maternal great grandmother. Would like to hear from you. Martha
My grandfather died believing he was
the great-grandson of Elijah. We have
since found out different, but if you
can scare up a picture of him it would
be nice to have a copy. Also, does
anybody know what became of Charles
Goodnight's young wife? Thanks,
Mary-Ann: I do have two different pictures of Elijah and will send them with other info if you will send me your mailing address.
Thank-you so much. Even though my
grandfather's story didn't hold up I
still feel closely related to this
group of Goodnights. I really
appreciate the pictures, can't wait
to see them. Mailing address:
4615 Oleander Drive
Myrtle Beach, SC 29577
Elijah Goodnight was my great great grandfather through daughter Sarah Elizabeth who married William Ervin "Buck" Westbrook.
Ralph, Sarah Elizabeth and your ancestor,Althea, were sisters. I only have one picture of Elijah as an old man. It was his wedding picture with fourth wife. I would love to have copies of the two pictures of him that you mentioned to Mary Ann Perry.
