Part III: The People - Early Settlers
Lamkin, Griffin, was born in Virginia, June 1, 1781, a son of Peter and Winifred (Dockins) Lamkin, both natives of that state. He was a well-educated man, who entered the War of 1812 as a Captain and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. About 1800 Griffin Lamkin moved from Virginia to Madison County, Alabama, where he became a very substantial planter and slave owner, possessing at one time as many as one hundred slaves. He was elected Representative from Madison County to the first Legislature held in the state and served during the sessions of 1819 and 1820. Shortly after this he lost the greater part of his fortune by going security of a note which was defaulted, and about 1830 moved to Walker County and settled on Wolf Creek. In 1844 he was appointed Clerk of the Circuit Court of Tuscaloosa County, and served for several years. He died on June 10, 1856, and is buried in the old cemetery at Jasper. Griffin Lamkin was married twice. On December 24, 1800, he was married in Madison County to Sarah Thacker, daughter of Samuel and Sally Thacker, who was born June 11, 1800, and died September 8, 1867 and is buried in the old cemetery at Jasper.

Children by second marriage: Petronella Lamkin, who married Elias Right; Maria Jane Lamkin; Peter Lamkin; Hannah Lamkin, who married William Byrd O’Rear (b. September 3, 1839 near Jasper); Sarah E. Lamkin, who married John Camak Ryan (b. January 27, 1839, died on November 11, 1922) –Children: Mary Ryan, Alice Ryan, Isaac Ryan, James Thomas Ryan, William Ryan, John Ryan and Sally Ryan; Thomas Peter Lamkin (b. on Wolf Creek, March 12, 1844, died in 1928 and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Jasper, married to Nannie M. Gravlee, who was born January 1, 1854); Martha Jane Lamkin, who married W. L. Sides.
