My father is from Worcester England and I have relatives in Stafford too. We came to live in Australia when I was a teenager and I have discovered distant relatives (Jewkes) here. If you have any connection with these two counties in England, we will probably find we are related somewhere along the line. Do please contact me, I would love to pass on what I know of the origins of our name.

My line of JEWKES came from Dudley, Worcester. Joseph died in 1850 leaving Mary as a Coal Dealer in Tipton, Staffs with children, Mary, Ann, Hannah, Elizabeth, Eliza, Selina, Ada and son Joseph. Joseph came to the States as an adult is my line. The name became Jukes.
If any of this intersects with yours, I'd love to know.

Thank you so much for your reply. It is possible we are related, which is really quite exciting. My father's family lived in College Street in Worcester. It was the last lych gate house. Do you recall it or know anything about it.

My father was born in 1916 and passed away in 1989. He was named Alwynne Archibald after his two uncles who fought in the first world war.

Does any of this ring any bells with you.

Also, my father was in the Grenadier Guards and served in North Africa and the Anzio campaigns.

Hello Jennifer,
Im sorry the places you have mentioned don't ring any bells, all that I know about my farther was that he was born in Worcester I have,nt a clue to any road or street names,Im afraid I did'nt take much interest untill my cousin Melvin started to trace our family name, and I just stumbled onto this websight, then I saw your message so I thought I would let you know about my farther and where he was born, because as you say it is not a common name, but I will find out as much as I can from my cousin, then I will post a message here to let you know what I have found out ,,ok,
I do know that my father was named after Sir Redvers Buller ( the boar war )and hat he has/had a brother who is/was a general in the "Salvation Army" who travelled all over the world, Im not sure if he is still alive though ! his name was "Fred Jewkes" .
I hope this helps in some way.

My Gt-Gt-Grandmother was Emma JEWKES, born Dudley 15 Sep 1831. Her father was William JEWKES, born Dudley c1795 and mother Mary ?, born Birmingham c1797.
In the 1841 Census, the family's address is Minories, Dudley. In 1851 the family lived in Oakeywell Street, Dudley. William was a Whitesmith and “employed 5 men and 5 boys”.
They had 8 children, as follows: John c1823, twins George (Grinder) & Joseph c1826, Mary c1829, Emma born 1831, Eliza c1833, Catherine c1824/5, and Harriet c1837.
Emma JEWKES married Abner DAVIES (Chainmaker, also of Dudley) on 3 Mar 1851, their first child and my Gt-Grandfather, John Edward DAVIES born earlier, on 9 Feb 1851. They had 4 more children and moved to London during the early 1860s. Emma died between 1861 and 1867 and her eldest son, John Edward DAVIES migrated to Sydney, Australia in 1875.
Any family information greatly appreciated.
