THESE 2 COUSINS ARRIVED IN CANADA IN 1911 ON "SAMLAND" FROM GERMAKOWKA, BORSZCSOW, WHICH WAS POLAND THEN BUT NOW UKRAINE. JAKEW WAS BORN 7th APRIL 1895.
ON ARRIVAL IN CANADA, JAKEW CHANGED HIS NAME TO JACK KURYSH AND LATER KURISH. HE WAS MY GRANDFATHER. HE DIED IN FORT WILLIAM (THUNDER BAY) IN 1934.I WOULD LIKE TO TRACE HIS COUSIN HNAT AND GET INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR PARENTS. I KNOW THAT THE 2 BOYS' GRANDFATHER WAS A WELL KNOWN ENGINEER FAMOUS FOR BUILDING BRIDGES. BOYS WERE MUSICAL.
I BELIEVE THAT THE YOUNG MEN HAD A FALLING OUT AND NEVER SPOKE AGAIN. ANY SUGGESTIONS WHAT "HNAT" MIGHT HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO

Have you had any luck researching the surname Kurysz? I have been struggling myself. My grandmother's maiden name is Kurysh...her father Dmytro Kurysz immigrated from Ukraine to Chicago in the 1920's. I have been hitting a lot of dead ends in my research and was wondering if you learned any new information about where your ancestors were from.

vielen danke,
my german is also nicht so gut. Is Hermakowka/Germakowka near GROCHOWCA or is it the same place. The story is that my grandfathers mother died and his father remarried and at age 16, he didnt feel welcome in new family. He had a sister. His grandfather - my great great grandfather was the person who sent Jakew and cousin Hnat to Canada in 1911.
My great great grandfather was a well known engineer and was famous for the bridges he built. This is just the story that we heard. Does any of it sound correct. Please keep in touch. Mary-Rose Campbell nee Kurysz

I think I can help you and tell you where Hnat later lived and where he is buried. I know this story from the other side who has already told me my grandma and my mother. My great grandmother Maria had a brother, Jakiw, who was born about 1895-1896. Her mother, Hannah died very early and her father Vasil remarried. And the same time at the beginning of the 20th century, when Jakiw was young about 16-17, he went with his cousin from Germakiwka Borschiw area to Canada or America. My great-grandma did not know exactly, because he has sent a letter in the 20-ies home with the photo of him and his cousin together, she could not determine where this letter kam from. Sie could not read or write. She has kept this photo. Later, the great-grandmother was deported to Siberia with their young children. It could be that's why she got not any letter from him. The Great-grandma told my grandma that Hnat has accidentally lost a lot of money of Jakiw, so Jakiw could not forgive him. Hnat returned to Ukraine.
My grandmother has often told me this story and we with my mother have given up with to seek and recently I found this page and this story. The great grandmother was also hoped that she will see her brother again. Why is the Jakiw died? He was so young? Has he lived in Canada his whole Life? Has he told something about his sister?
Exscuse me for my Englisch. I hope, you can understand? I speak German and Ukraine too? I am granddaughter von Maria Kurysh Galina Götz

Hi,
Thank you for posting the information you have. I was excited to read it. Hnat is my great grandfather. He and Jakiw immigrated to Canada April 1911. Hnat actually left and went to the United States in 1913. He entered the US on foot on April 13, 1913. By 1918 he made it to New York City, New York and married. I have been able to obtain his Naturalization Records.

Do you have a copy of the picture of Jakiw and Hnat? I would love to see it. I have pictures and documents of Hnat I can send to you. Do you know Hnat's parents names? Please email me at jahcottontail@gmail.com

Take Care,
Julie

wow at last the story fits. My grandfather was Jakiw !!!He died in 1934 when my father was just 2 ( my faher is still alive and well ) following an accindent in the forest, from which he developed blood poisining because he didnt get help on time - too isolated. Nothing much is known about Jakew's life before Canada and because he died so young my faher never gor any family history. I do know that Jakew and Hnat had a big fight and never spoke again. Therre was also a very valuable violin which was stolen and has never been found.Jakew's wife was Maria Ziombra of Morden, Manitoba, also of Polish/Ukrainain/Austrian - I have her full history as her whole family came out together.
Does the story about Jakew's gandfather being a well known civil engineer, building mainly bridges mean anything to "our" history. I am so excited. I live in Austalia by the way.Your english is excellent.Cant wait to hear more.
Any information you can give me will be great for my dad as he knows nothing of his father. Dad is a retired school teacher and a musician. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi my name is Alissa Kurys Johnson great granddaughter of Hnat Kursyz. I came across your name on a google search for my great grandfather. my family has just started researching the family.

Hnat had 3 children Helen, Dorothy And Peter. Peter was my grandfather. He passed 8 years ago. Hnat died in 1971 he is buried in Greenwood cemetery in Brooklyn NY. In our search we saw that Hnat and your grandfather sailed together on the same ship from Germany. We have just started getting documents on Hnat we have copies of the ships manifest which shows both hnat and Jakiw's names on it. I can send them to you if you would like.
