Looking for information on a Henry Underdonk or Onderdonk
that married Ann Maddock in Berkeley County Virginia (now WV)
in 1796. I do not have a birthdate. I have the marriage
document but it does not give the parents information. If you
have anything please let me know. Thanks!

I don't have any information that would help you directly, however i'm doing research on my boyfriends family (the Ellis') and one of them, Clarence Ellis, married a Mrs. Bertie Underdunk. Most of the Ellis lines, including Clarence, resided in Berkeley Co., WV.
We also found some gravesites (located on a private property) in Darkesville, WV, which is just minutes south of Martinsburg. I have photos of the headstones of Maria F. [Mayhew] Underdonk, William Underdonk, and Mary Underdunk from that cemetery. There was also a Charles Underdunk buried there. Not sure if these are related to the Ellis' yet, but I do know that Bertie and her 1st husband had a
daughter, Daisy. There is also a Virginia Underdunk in this line somewhere.
In any event, I thought this might help you, and perhaps we can share info. I don't have much (really, very little) but I can send those headstone pics if you'd like.
And maybe you can help to clarify this connection for me :)
ps. you're e-mail addy doesn't work ..

Clarence Ellis married Mrs. Charles Newton Underdonk. I can't read her name on the 1900 census but I have seen it elsewhere as Seina Frances Light and that her parents were George Smith Light and Fannie Virginia Welshans. The Underdonks and Lights are on the same 1900 census page in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

As far as I know at this point Charles Newton Underdonk was the son of Newton C. Onderdonk and Virginia B. Reed. His grandparents were Henry Onderdonk and Julia Bellar on his father's side and James Furlong Reed and Ann Snyder on his mother's side. His great-grandparents on the Onderdonk side were Henry Underdonk and Ann Maddock. I haven't found a connection of this Henry Underdonk to the rest of the Onderdonk family but suspect he may have come from Somerset, New Jersey. I know Jill Underdonk was working on this family and may have had more success since she is more closely related.

I think Charles N. Underdonk and his wife had five children: Bessie Belle, Charles N., Bertie Marie, Daisy Marie, and Virginia Underdonk. Then after Charles Underdonk died, Bertie/Seina--since I'm not sure of her name--and Clarence Ellis had a daughter Evelyn Frances Ellis.

That's the extent of what I know and it could certainly use some confirmation. I'd like to connect these Underdonks to the rest of the Onderdonks and hopefully that can get figured out too. Does anyone know more than this?

Thanks for the information! I know that they are related to me. My Dad is William and his brother is Charles which are names that have been in the family for years. I have not been getting on the internet much lately because my computer is down. I also have pictures of grave sites from another cemetery in Martinsburg. If you have copies of these photographs, I would love to have a copy. I also know how William fits in the picture. My address is Jill Underdonk PO Box 1564 Huntington, WV 25716. We need to keep in touch because I know that these families are related. In addition, I was in NEW York in July and that is where the family is documented as being one of the founding Dutch families of NY City. This is very exciting. Thanks!

I still have nothing to absolutely prove that Henry Onderdonk is the same one from New Jersey but it does look good. I do have the marriage between Henry and Ann Maddock but it does not go into detail since it occured in December of 1796 and the law (?) changed in January 1797 to provide more information. This has been a thorn in my side for sometime.

The connections seems plausible. Here's what we've got..

Clarence ELLIS' brother, Samuel "Eck" ELLIS, married a Nellie Mae LIGHT -- the daughter of George S. & Frances V. "Fannie" [Welshans] LIGHT.

George S. LIGHT was b. 23 July 1856 in WV and d. in 1918.
Frances V. WELSHANS was b. abt. 1857. They m. in 1875.

Their dau., Nellie M., was b. 10 September 1886 in WV and d. 30 September 1967 in Martinsburg, WV. She is buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Martinsburg. She m. "Eck" ELLIS 06 September 1908. They had 5 children - Margaret Virginia RUDY, Mildred E. ROCKWELL, George Ellsworth, Clarence Delbert, & Frances Mae BILLMYER.

Clarence ELLIS was b. Aug. 1884 and d. unknown. His wife "Bertie" was b. unknown and d. 17 April 1928 in Martinsburg, WV. She is buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Martinsburg.

Their dau., Evelyn Frances ELLIS, was b. 25 November 1921 in Berkeley Co., WV and d. 24 January 1973 in Berkeley County.

We were told by the granddaughter of Nellie ELLIS that her mothers Uncle Clarence was married twice.. both times to women named "Bertie". The chances of this occuring seem impressively small, but it has yet to be disproven [yet].

Thank you very much for providing the Underdonk [] information. It sure does fill in a few blanks we had in our files.

We're willing to help in any way we can. Feel free to contact me at if you'd like to share.

Thanks again!
