Looking for date of death & burial locatioin of Burness MCKINNEY b 1/1833 Rutherford County. Parents Willis & Martha or Willis & Patsy. In Cleveland County on 1 October 1861 he was married to Elizabeth V "Betsie" COGDALE, daughter of Thomas & Rebecca Horn Cogdale. Burness &a Betsie had one daugher, Martha b 1863, and then he disappears. Believe Martha to be buried at Union Baptist Church, Cleveland Co, but cannot prove. Hoping Burness' burial site will lead me to Betsie. Any help locating the final resting place of this small family will be greatly appreciated.

Thought I'd update this message as long, long ago I found that Burness died of disease on 23 Sep 1863 while serving in Company B, the 34th Regiment of NC Troops during the Civil War. He was only 30 years old. Apparently Betsie never remarried as she applied for & collected a Widow's pension. I do not know where he is buried. Betsie died between 1885 and 1900. I believe she is buried with her parents in the family graveyard. If not there she may lie at Union Baptist Church, or Rehobeth Methodist Church, both near Polkville in Cleveland County, NC. She has family in all three places, but no marker seems to exist for her.

Good morning--

I'm also searching for death/burial information for Burnice/Burness McKinney, as well as records of his service, and the pension received by Elizabeth Cogdale/Cogdell McKinney. Her pension states that Burnice died on 23 Sep 1863.

Your post on Find-a-Grave notes his enlistment date as 15 Apr 1863; are you aware of any documentation of his enlistment? Two miscellaneous cards in the Compiled Service Records show that a B.M. McKinney of the 34th North Carolina Reg't was admitted to a Petersburg, VA military hospital in June 1864, and subsequently transferred to Richmond -- but there's nothing more in the NARA files.

Would be grateful for any data you're willing to share. Thank you!
