I am looking to connect with other descendants of Raleigh J. Shipley born 1844 in Tenn. and died 1931 in Mo. Raleigh's ancestry goes back to Adam Shipley who arrived in MD in the 1600's. I have found a published interview with Raleigh conducted around 1917 that would be of interest to any of his descendants.

Could you post the direct line back to Adam SHIPLEY of Maryland? Shipleys of MD, 2002, only has Edward SHIPLEY, d. ca. 1829, Warren Co., TN), with no ancestry. One Edward was still of of Warren Co., TN, 1840. The first known Edward of Warren Co. transferred land in Claiborne Co., TN, to sons Talbert (b. 1794) & Tidence (b. 1796) ca. 1820. He probably also had Raleigh (b. ca. 1792), and others.

Did the interview give clues to the ancestry of Raleigh J. SHIPLEY? My SHIPLEY line is from Eli SELBY & wf. Ruth SHIPLEY, m. 1794, MD, from John, Adam, Richard, Adam SHIPLEY, all of Maryland.

Volume I, The Shipleys of Maryland 2002 on page 16 lists Edward Shipley as a son of Robert Shipley, Jr. of Robert(2), Adam (1). They don't provide any year of birth. On page 31 they state that this is probably the same Edward Shipley found in legal papers in KY and Va.

In the interview Raleigh J. says his grandfather Raleigh was born in North Carolina but moved to Tennessee and was among the first settlers of Tennesse and that he was in Jackson's army in 1812. Most records indicate that Raleigh was actually born in Tennesse but Edward Shipley did live in North Carolina and fought in the Militia during the Revolutionay War.

I noticed your post on Raleigh Shipley, born in eastern TN or possibly MD (1786-1792?). He died in Dade County, MO in the 1870's. Raleigh is in my family tree.

My search on his father, Edward, leads me to he and his wife's involvement with the Big Springs Baptist Church in north-east TN, but that is about all I know.

Do you have any information on where and when Edward was born ?

Thanks ...... Stan Shipley

Edward Shipley was born in Maryland around 1739. Edward is a descendant of Adam Shipley who arrived in Maryland in 1668. Adam Shipley is one of the founding fathers of the First Families of Maryland. I have additional information on this family if you want to contact me at

There is a small amount of info regarding Edward SHIPLEY and his involvement in Rev. War in and around Mecklenburg Co., NC, if you search online; that is, if this is same Edward SHIPLEY, and I believe it is the same. It also mentions George SHIPLEY and his involvement. I cannot remember where I saw it but just do a search on him online. I have found an Edward SHIPLEY in Knox or Jefferson Co., Tn. also but don't know if he is same. I think when he left Mecklenburg Co., he then went to Tenn. Hope this helps.
