I am researching for an article on the poem, "Autumn in Martins Ferry, Ohio." I want to know the background surrounding James Wright's writing of that particular poem. He wrote it in 1961, I think. I'd like to know about borrowing old high school football schedules or old, early 60s or late 50s football game photographs, in the Shreve stadium. Also, is there a connection between James Wright and Lou Groza--would they have known each other?

Lou Groza played football for Martins Ferry High from 1936-1940. He was a classmate of my mother. The age difference may make the connection rather unlikely as Lou later played with the Cleveland Browns from the 1940's onward. My father grew up with Lou Groza & played sandlot football with him. He never mentioned Lou speaking of Mr. wright.

I wonder what people in Martins Ferry think about that poem. What do the local high school teachers say about it when they teach their classes? It seems to say local football is ritualized violence that is both terrible and beautiful, but a necessary roughness for what is characterized as a dead end town (perhaps that's what the town was in the late 1950s.)

I wonder how many Martins Ferrians are familiar with that poem today?

I am a MF grad & I never heard of it! Martins Ferry was a good place to live in the 50's & 60's but it is a dead end town now! There is literally nothing going on there now! I left in the mid 80's due to a lack of job prospects like a lot of other grads did!!

Does anyone remember Andy Toth or his family. He played football around the same time as Lou Groza?

Hello, I was wondering if your father may have known my father. His name was Andy Toth. He played with the Purple Riders all four years of high school. Dad graduated in 1943. I lost him in Vietnam in 1971 so there is much I don't know about him, but I know he LOVED football. I'd appreciate anything you could tell me of your father's days playing football as they would be the same years my father played.

Thank you for your time
