Re: 1920 mccurtain cty census
I don't have direct answer, but maybe a brief history of the town might explain it in part.
The town of Smithville, as we now know it, wasn't platted until 7 Dec 1912 ... a short distance south of it's previous location of Hatobi.
By 1919, it had a population of an estimated 1000 people, 8 stores, 2 hotels, 2 restaurants, 2 lawyers, and 2 blacksmiths. But, there wasn't a city goverment until April of 1922.
It continued to be very rural and isolated until past the 1930's. The "McCurtain County: A Pictorial History" (from which I get this data) states that for residents to travel to Idabel, they had to go to Cove, Arkansas and then take a train to Ashdown, Arkansas, then across to the community of Frisco, Oklahoma then to Idabel.
The book I cite is available from the McCurtain County Historical Society, 302 SE Adams, Idabel, OK 74745.
Further, there are several "locations" cited in the 1920 and1930 census for the county that no longer exist, and in many cases, people now-a-days don't even know where they were.

Re: 1920 mccurtain cty census
Old age must do something to us ... I plain forgot about the use of census districts back then (Thanks to Elaine, I remembered).
There is an entry (but no image for John Francis Sharp, age 36 (born 1873 in TN) in the 1-Twp, McCurtain County, Oklahoma for 1910.
In 1920, the following information was found for the Mountain District, McCurtain County, Oklahoma:
SHARP, John F. 46 TN (Head) Lula Ann 41 TN (wife) Willie Amos 18 OK (son) Francis Martin 16 OK (son) Odie Reid 13 OK (son) [first name may be wrong, can't read it] Howard Taft 11 OK (son) Clarence Lee 7 OK (son) Charles W. 5 OK (son) John LeRoy 3 10/12 (son) Anna Belle 1 1/12 (dau)

thanks so much to everyone who helped me with this. yes, if i had just kept looking through mccurtain, i would have found them in mountain. genealogy people are so great. for those of you interested in this kind of thing, the francis sharp and annabelle sharp listed are my parents, strangely enough. my mom wasnt john and lula's daughter but an orphan they had taken in. no blood relation. it does make for an interesting family circle, i mean, tree. lol thanks again. you guys are wonderful.

Re: 1920 mccurtain cty census
Elaine ... do you know where I can find a map of the county that shows the districts for the 1910 thru 1930 census periods?
Most of the family I have been researching within the county are in the Sulphur district, which I pretty much have figured out to be the Wright City/Valliant area. But I am interested in seeing the extent of coverage for not only it, but the others as well. The "Eagle" district I assume to be in the Eagletown area, the "White" district I would guess to be the Broken Bow area, and the "Frisco" district I would assume to be in the area of Haworth to Tom. I'm not able to conjure up locations/boundaries for the Kirk, Fowler, or Wilson districts.
