my 2-ggrandfather was listed as Jonathan E Garley in census of about 1860. He was shown as married to Georgianna (maiden name not given) and father of 2 daughters and one infant son. One daughter, "Ocea" or Oceanna was my greatgrandmother and married to Allison Virgil Pusey. The infant son was listed I believe as John.
Since John is a common nickname for Johnathan, it is possible this is the same person. I've found him listed in two census' and in one he was listed as a hunter, the other listed occupation as farmer (if memory serves) My computer is in shop for upgrades right now and I don't have the info readily available. Try checking the 1850 or 1860 time frame census for I believe Delaware or Maryland. Hope this is of use. I've found my GARLEY ancestors elusive to trace.

I got your message on about John.
Colonels in the Civil War, as now, normally
come from well-do-do families and connected
politically with their state governor who did
appoint many officers. They were promoted by
field battles and honor or simply by the stroke
of a pen back in the state (that's politics).

So John Garley the farmer might not be the one
I am looking for. Yet, he may have been a very
wealthy farmer with influence. Interestng search.

Would you keep me in mind after your computer is
repaired and online? Details would help my search.

Thank you for e-mailing. I am still interested in
finding John and his family. Thank you very much.

Saw this post just now, and thought I'd send the following link on Colonel John Edgar Gurley of the 135th United States Colored Troop Infantry Regiment from the American Civil War.

The biography of the Colonel can be found on Pages 132 to 135.
