I am looking for information on my grandfather and his brother. My grandfather was named James Hepburn and his brother was Robert Gray Hepburn. They were both golfers and born in Scotland. Robert was a golf pro and for a time lived in Royston, Hertfordshire, England with his wife, Margaret, and two daughters, Marjory and Phyliss.James was a golf pro and a professional golfer. At one time he was Secretary of the British PGA. James came to NY about 1912 with his wife, Emily Preston, and his two daughters, Daphne and Joan, to become golf pro at the National Golf Links in Southampton, NY. He headed the committe to form the US PGA. They also had a sister, Jessie. Any information on them would be greatly appreciated. I am interested in discovering any living relatives..

I am in the process of looking through this family for my wife's family tree.

I have come up with 5 children in the hepburn family that James belonged to - Jessie, Robert, James, James (the one you are interested in) and David.
It would appear that their father died before 1888 and his mother remarried to a William Green and it is this line that I am researching.
However we might be able to exchange some details with each other if you wish.

I can give you details farther back on his mothers side if you want, but I have no other details about his father side since it is the Green and Gray sides that I have an interest in.

John,
My grandfather, James Hepburn, son or James Hepburn and Margaret Gray also had a sister Agnes who must have died at an early age. I did not know of a David Hepburn. When was he born? Do you know what happened to Jessie Hepburn? When did Margaret remarry? Did she have any children by her second husband?Thank you for your reply. Hope to hear from you
Joan

Hi, thanks for the reply
I didn't know about Agnes either but have just done a quick search and found her in the IGI and UK gov data.

I have
Jessie Scrimgeor Hepburn (b 3/3/1868 in Dundee)
Robert Gray Hepburn (b 9/6/1869)
Agnes Smart Hepburn (b 2/2/1871 - d 1871)
James Carmichael Hepburn (b Barry Angus 21/5/1872 - d BEF 1881)
James Melville Drone Hepburn (b Barry Angus 1876)
David Hepburn (b ? - alive after 1927)

The only information I have about David so far is that he lived at 69 North Tay Street Dundee and witnessed the death certificate for his mother 4/3/1927.

The 1881 census lists James and Margaret living at 44 Lilybank Road Dundee with 3 children - James (4) Jessie (13) and Robert (11)

Margaret remarried to William Green in Barry Angus 25/2/1888 at Clayholes - probably a Carnoustie address.

William had also been previously married and had at least 1 child that I know of - another William.

Together they also had another child - Albert Green - born Carnoustie 12/4/1888

When Margaret died in 1927 she lived at 7 Lyon Street Dundee and died of Astimio(?) Sclerosis Myocarditis (don't ask - I don't know!)

Margaret was one of 3 children that I have found so far - She had a brother called James Smeaton Gray and a sister called Elizabeth Murdock Gray.

She married James Hepburn in Dundee 31/12/1869.

Her parents were David Gray and Margaret Carmichael who married in Dundee 11/7/1826.

Margaret Carmichael was born probably in Coupar Angus 25/3/1805 and she died in Dundee 11/7/1826. I havn't started to look down David Grays line yet so don't have any more information here.

Margaret Carmichael's parents were Donald Carmichael and Euphan Anderson and seem to have been married in the Canongate Edinburgh 25/5/1804

This last bit is an 'intelligent guess'. Margaret Carmichaels death certificate indicates parents surnames but not christian names, and working backwards to find an approximate dob from the death certificate came up with this as the only possible link. If it is correct Donald and Euphan must have moved from Edinburgh not long after the wedding to Coupar Angus.

If the link is true Euphan is listed as having John Anderson as her father but there are no other details so far.

I was looking up details of James Hepburn on the internet and found he was a club manufacturer and also a course designer. I also found a picture of him playing in a competition - probably in USA - with a playing parter of Harry Vardon which sounds quite impressive.

Hope this is enough to keep you going.

If I have missed anything you could let me know.
John

Yes, my grandfather was James Hepburn. He was a professional golfer and a member of the British PGA. I believe that at one time he served as secretary of that group. He was brought to America in 1915 by Charles McDonald to serve as pro at the National Golf Links in Southampton, New York. He taught golf lessons for several winters at Wanamakers in Manhattan for his friend, Sam Wanamaker. After a few years of doing that he went to Tuckerkstown, Bermuda where he served as golf pro winters at the Mid Ocean Golf Links.
He served as chairman of the group that was formed to begin the American PGA. He died of cancer in 1945.
I have Margaret Gray's parents as being Andrew Gray and Agnes Crystal. Agnes' parents were Mary Archibald and James Crystal. All were from Dysart, Fife, Scotland.
I would love to see any photos that you have seen of my grandfather, Could you please give the the web site where you found any. Thank you.
Please feel free to contact me at my e-mail address .

I don't think your Margaret GRAY who married James HEPBURN was the daughter of Andrew GRAY and Agnes CRYSTAL/CHRYSTAL.

On the 1871 Census, Margaret Grover HEPBURN, wife of James HEPBURN, said she was 20 years old (b. abt 1851) in Dundee, Forfarshire. On the 1881 Census, Margaret HEPBURN, wife of James HEPBURN, said she was 32 (b. abt 1849) in Dundee, Forfar.

The Margaret GRAY, daughter of Andrew GRAY and Agnes CRYSTAL, was born about 1846 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire according to the 1851 Census. She is not with her parents on the 1861 Census. She may have died young, or she may be working as a servant in another household, but I did not find a great match. The oldest daughter, Mary A. GRAY (gave her name as Mary Ann GRAY when she married James MCGREGOR in 1871 in Edinburgh) was still at home with her parents in 1861 (age 17), apparently working with her father (Andrew was a Potter and Mary A.'s occupation is given as Pottery Worker).

Andrew GRAY and Agnes CRYSTAL were residing in Airth, Stirlingshire in 1851 and 1861. I have not been able to find any of the children in the OPR, but according to the two census records, they had 7 daughters, the last 5 all born in Stirlingshire. No sons on the census records.

My mum is trying to track down any living relatives, from the Hepburn side.

Robert was her grandfather and brother to James (Jimmy). She knows both brothers were golfers from Carnoustie, and Jimmy emigrated to USA, before later moving to Bermuda.

Her mother was Robena Hepburn. 'Rob' was one of 6 children to Robert Gray Hepburn & Margaret Hepburn - the others being Marjorie, Phyllis, Cecil (female), Violet & Donald.

Auntie 'Vi' Violet was still in contact with Daphne, who was living in New York until she passed away a few years ago. In terms of relatives, Daphne was the end of the line. Does anyone know if Daphne had children or siblings, or are their any other decendents from Jimmy (James).

Thanks
Simon (Grandson of Robena, Great Grandson of Robert)

Birthdates and places would make identification in gedcoms and other programs much easier, especially for confoirmation on correct identities.
