In reference to the query of John Gearhart, 12/17/2000,and replies from Marilyn Monson, 12/20/00,detailed information about the family of John Alexander can be found on this web site( Co.) under biographies-Robert M. Alexander. This material is referenced to A History of the State, Battle, Perin and Kiffen, 4th ed. ,1887, Cumberland Co. It is much the same information provided by Marilyn Monson in her response. She also provided detailed information about the children of Peter Gearhart and Obedience Alexander.A reply by Lisa Haug,10/16/98 to a query fom Bill Edleman, 10/12/98 at this site quotes from Peter Gearhart's will that lists his children, prividing a potential source of confirmation. This document is also quoted as mentioning his son-in-law, John C. Smith(keep in mind for later).According to the biographical source noted above, It was John Alexander's father, John Sr., who was a Captain in the Revolution. Another discrepency is that the same source says that John Alexander's wife was Lucy Martin and Lisa Haug says in her reply that his wife was Lucy Nunn. My great, great grandfather was John Calhoun Smith who married Sarah Dudley, daughter of Peter Gearhart and Obedience Alexander, daughter of John Alexander and Lucy Martin or Nunn. Scraps of geneological notes passed down to me and oral family tradition have sometimes referred to Sarah Dudley as Sarah Dudley Gearhart, apparently because of the difficulty reconciling her surname of Dudley with her father's name of Gearhart. It was also said that she was in some way related to "the Dudleys of Va." and that she was a cousin of Bishop Dudley. I have been able to find only two Bishop Dudleys, both in a prominent N. C. family of the 1700's and early 1800's and can find no connection with the Gearharts, Alexanders or Martins. Further, I can find no Dudleys in Cumberland Co. at the time. This problem seems to have been solved in part by Mayrilyn Monsons stating that Sarah Gearhart married a Dudley and by the information provided by Lisa Haug stating that Peter Gearhart's will mentions his son-in-law, John C. Smith, suggestimg that the marriage to John C Smith was her second. Several individuals have primary or supplemental D.A.R. lines that descend from Capt. Mathew Smith,a Continental soldier, through John C.. Smith and Sarah Dudley, but I have not yet reviewed the primary information (nat nos.352408, 78623, 99965, 87724 and others).Other miscellaneous material from my notes indicates that Obedience Alexander was born in Cumberland Co. on a farm later owned by El Diers. Lucy Alexander died in 1815 and John in 1830. Both are buried at their place of settlement on Marrow Bone Creek. Peter Gearhart emigrated from Germany. He was a teacher at his church at Casey Fork and was said to be "a merchant of power in the 1830's" There are recorded Cumberland Co. land suveys for Peter Gearhart, John Alexander and John Smith on or near Marrow Bone Creek. Would appreciate any futher information about Sarah Gearhart Dudley/John C. Smith and whether John Alexander's wife was Lucy Martin or Lucy Nunn and if Peter Gearhart emigrated from Germany as we think.
