I'm having problems with how last names are spelled in the various censuses of Tyrell county, NC. Hopefully someone can recognize either the following Stephen or William as an ancester and help me link in.

Census Names
1800 Craddick, Stephen and William
1810 Cradock, Stephen and William
1820 Credick, Stephen and Cradik William
1830 Craddock, Stephen and William

My GGGGfather, William Chadwick, was married in Tyrrell and moved to Currituck Co., NC. I believe his father, William, is the William Craddock (variations) listed above.

If you have someone from Tyrrell, NC, please send me a note.

Thanks for any help I can get.

Vickie, thanks for your reply. I've been trying to see if my ggggrandfather Chadwick was possibly a Craddock. Even though the names don't look similar, in one census he is listed as Chaddock, which is only one letter off.

Anyway, I was wondering if you had run into anything similar. Also, I found your James Craddock in the 1860 census, but not the 1850. Do you know where he was in 1850 for that census? There was a group of Chadwicks in Carteret county and a group of Craddocks up in Virginia, so was wondering where he came from.

good morning john. i have found this name spelled many ways.
cradic, craddick,cradoc,cradick,etc. it
makes if very confusing.

james and 1st wife elizabeth were not married until
10-1850. he was a master mariner and
sailed out of baltimore on a regular route
to the caribbean. if he was out of port at
the time he may never show up on a census
before 1860. most family records were
destroyed in coastal storms and fire in the
early 1900's. his ships log was stolen in the
mid 50's early 60's. all that is remembered
about it was that it was written in red ink.
no one can even remember the name of the ship.
i have been told that he was born in england
but the census indicated he was born in
tyrrell co. i can't pin him to any of the
other families. unless i can come up with
his parents names i'm at a stone wall.

i wish you better luck than i'm having.

Vickie, I just found the following info under the site. I hope it's useful.

James Craddock married Elizabeth Skinner in Tyrrell Co. on 25 OCT 1850. The web page is

The 1860 census record, which you've already found is at

The Chadwicks (Chaddocks) in Carteret co. were a seafaring family, having been whalers that settled there around 1729.

Happy hunting.

I found no Skinner family in any of the various census records, but a Thomas Skinner was married in 1848.
