My mom's parents died by 1928 and left 10 children ranging from 1-17 years old. 7 of the children were placed at St. Joseph's Home for the Friendless. Could anyone shed light on this orphanage. I think it may have been located in Arlington Heights, Illinois but am not sure why I think this. Her siblings and her have no childhood pictures, never talked about their childhood, their parents, the orphanage etc. Would like to find out all I can about the place.

I too am looking for the Home. My grandmother has a baptismal certificate from St. Joesph's in 1913, when her and a number of the 21 children were left there. He brother thought it was in Chicago, but we never found out. Have you found anything?

I was informed by the records keeper that any records that are older than 1970 were destroyed and there is no way to retrieve them.

Ok ... thanks for checking. Could I possible still have them check a name. He had sister there as well, Her name was Katherine, Kathryn Bordenkecher. My husband was shown a letter from his mother which the nuns had black out the important parts out. I wish that they had just given the letter to him.. Thanks again.

I know that this "home" was in Chicago, Cook County, Illiniois. The home was was about a block to half a block from a memorial, Steven A Douglas memorial. I was told that the records up to 1970 were destroyed which is heart breaking. The home was used during the civil war as a hospital for injured soldiers. The home was run by the Catholic Charities and nuns took care of the children.

I was in this sad place for almost 3 years from 3 1/2 years until I was just about 6 years old leaving in 1962. The nuns were despicable. I remember it to be haunted and creepy. I can understand why anyone imprisoned here would not like talking about it.
