There appear to be several migrations of
the Witz family to America. My father,
Klaus Witz, came from Germany in the mid-1950's. We have the family genealogy from Germany going back centuries. I am also
aware of a prominent Witz family that lived
in Staunton Virginia.

Very interested in talking directly to you. Please e-mail me at
Do you know of other Witz family members that immigrated much earlier say in the 1750 - 70's era? Hope to hear from you soon.

I recently saw a record about a german-born sailor aboard the Merrimack. No other details. That was around 1863, so maybe later than what you are looking for

My grandfather (either Robert K. Witz or Karl Robert Witz and mother (Regina Fritzall) migrated from Riga Latvia in the late 1800's. Not sure of where they came from in Europe--maybe a town or village called "Witz" or something similar.

My grandparents migrated from Riga Latvia (maybe originally from Germany) in the late 1800s, then eventually to Chicago.
Their names were Robert Karl Witz or Karl Robert Witz and Regina Fritzall. He had a brother named Adolph who lived in New York City.
They had 6 children. Would be interested to see if there is a connection, possibly in Europe.

That is interesting -- I suspect
that the Witz name might have originated
somewhere east of Germany. As you may
know, it's a place name meaning "little
forest" -- it's generally used as a suffix
and may be related to the Polish "wicz"
It occasionally occurs as simply "Witz."
I will get the genealogy from my uncle Wolfgang and we can see if we have a connection. I've researched my U.S. ancestors fairly extensively on my Mother's side -- I think It's time I worked on my German father's side a little.
P.S. My brother's name is Karl!

Good to hear from you and will be great to see what your German lineage looks like. Also remembered that my Grandfather had, I think, 2 brothers, Adolph Witz in New York, and another in Denison Tx, Phillip. Phillip married Mamie Lee (some distant relation to Robert E. Lee) and they had a son who is a retired lawyer in Dallas, David Witts (he changed the spelling).

My Grandfather was married to Regina Fritzshall, who also immigrated from Riga, Latvia. They had 6 kids; my Dad was the youngest. He had an older brother and 4 older sisters.

I have heard uncorroborated stories that the family owned either an electrical company or tin/metals company in Germany.

If any of this sounds familiar, let me know.
