Wolfram, where is Silesia. My great great grandfather was from Bavaria and came to the United States in 1840. Settled in Kentucky. His name was Abraham Steinau and his occupation was merchant. I have no history before his arrival in America.

Cindy,
Silesia is a former part of Germany which now belongs to Poland. My father was born in a town called Hindenburg close to Gleiwitz (Gliwice). Below is more information which I found on MSN Encarta:
"Silesia
Silesia (Polish Slask; German Schlesien; Czech Slezsko), historic region of Central Europe, mostly in what is now southwestern Poland, comprising the provinces of Katowice, Opole, Wroclaw, Walbrzych, Jelenia Góra, and Legnica and part of Zielona Góra. Silesia also included sections of present-day north central Czech Republic and of the states of Brandenburg and Saxony in eastern Germany. In the Middle Ages, Silesia was settled by a mixed German and Polish population. It became part of the kingdom of Poland in the 11th century and was acquired by Bohemia in the 14th century. The region was ruled by the Austrian Habsburgs from 1526 to 1742, when most of it was annexed by Prussia. In the 19th century it became a center for the textile and coal-mining industries. After World War II (1939-1945), almost all of Prussian Silesia reverted to Poland, and the German population was expelled."

All of the Steinau family is related. We were a large German family that originated from the city of Steinau, and spread out to surrounding areas. Although we are all distant cousins, I have much info on the German part and the origination of the family names. Please contact me and share the addresses of the rest of the Steinau family members. Better contact each other on shared emails rather than through this system. I am aware that some of the Steinau family went to Kentucky.

Lisa,
My half sister, Mary Elizabeth (FLEISCHMANN)
Faulstich, wrote me concerning Grandpa Joe
and Great Uncle Henry FLEISCHMANN:
"They also had a sister, Klara...Klara FLEISCHMANN married a Jewish man in Peoria,
I think his last name was STEINAU, I am not real sure of the spelling.
Can you shed any light on this? Was this man also a descendant of Jacob GROSS's mother
Elizabeth (Steinau) GROSS?

Please keep in touch,
Cousin Dan.
