I am so happy to see so many Oilers researching our name. I have just begun and would love o find out info about where our name decended from. Most of my immidiate family is from Va., Wva, and In. I have the NEW WORLD BOOK OF OILERS and have found this reference but do not know how to use it for I have just started on the net two days ago; Naturalization Applications for Montgomery County. Crawfordsville, IN: Geneal. HistoricalSoc. 1979. "John arrived in the New World in 1828. Pg. 62."
again if anyone would be so kind to help out a newcomer to geneology it will be most appriciated.
Thank You
Richard Oiler

I've been doing research for several years, but I just started on this side of the family!

The best source of info that I've found is the GENFORUM web site. Check out the OYLER surname page (OYLER is the original spelling of the name...just one of the tidbits I've picked up)!
I found a distant cousin there...I have a GEDCOM file that I just received from them. I'd be happy to forward you a has Oylers back to Virgina in early 1800s.

I was also able to learn alot from James Johnson who also posts in this forum.

Hopefully this helps...I look forward to sharing info with you!

Hi. I have a bit of information about the Oiler Family. My maternal grandfather was Omar Smith. He came to Illinois from Kokomo, IN. His parents were David Smith (born 1865) and Adeline Pollack(born 1869)>daughter of James Pollack (born 1839) Louisa or Lousia Oiler> daughter of Cathy VanBreint (sp?)(born 1812) and Dr. Levi Oiler (born 1812)>son of Henry Oiler (born 1776) and Bethsheba McGlaurey or McGlauney (born 1770). Henry Oiler's father was Henry Oiler I, born in 1740. Bethsheba's parents were Patrick McGlaurey or McGlauney and elizabeth Montgomery.
