Stella Linden is my step-mother. She married my father Terence Duff in London around 1948-9. She was an actress and writer. She left my father for America in 1951 and is believed to have divorced my father by having a "quickie" Mexican divorce not long afterwards. It is believed she lived in the Hollywood/Los Angeles area. Any news at all of her life (and death?) in America would be appreciated.

Is there anyone in the U.K. who can connect with Stella?

An update: Stella LINDEN married my father Terence DUFF in July 1948 at the Paddington Registrar's Office, London. Stella's mother had a sister and they were both related to the WIMBUSH family of Birmingham who were proprietors of confectionery and tea-shops. Stella had a step-brother called Ambrose.

Stella was an actress and writer. She helped John Osborne write his first play and directed it in Huddersfield in 1950. In 1951, she left for America and about a year later wrote to my father saying she had had a 'quickie' divorce in Mexico. Apart from a TV appearance in late 1951, her other credits in America are writing a script for a Monkees TV episode, and writing a book "Two a Penny" which became a film for which she wrote the screenplay. Nothing else is known of her.

Can anyone help?
Chris

I have had all my questions answered on the WIMBUSH message board. Stella LINDEN was the stage name of my actress step-mother. Her birth name was Stella MARSDEN and she had married once before to a COULTHARD before marrying my father Terence DUFF.

Wikipedia has a biography of Stella LINDEN, actress, author and screenwriter which is factual to a degree. What is most interesting is the fact, unreferenced, that she died in New Mexico on 6/3/2005. Is there any way this can be corroborated? Has anyone access to records of this death?

Stella is my step-mother and, although I am acquainted with her early life up to around 1950, I am still struggling to put together what she did after she left England for the bright lights of America. She did marry again, but it is not known to whom and when, apart from it being around 1951 +/- one year.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who came in contact with her in America, particularly California where she spent most of her time around Hollywood and Los Angeles.

My brother, Jim, lived with a woman of this name and approximate age in Malibu Canyon, CA. around 1970. He has been looking for info as to her whereabouts. He may be able to fill in some of the gaps, but his memory is possibly flawed. I have a photo of her at that time period if you can verify her identity.

Hi Barbara,

Close, but no cigar methinks! My step-mother, Stella Linden, had black hair and a model's body, prominent jaw-line and cheekbones. Stella Maris Marsden was born on 5 June, 1919 in Birmingham, England, to Charles Marsden and Ruby Wimbush. She married c1939 and there is an unconfirmed record of the death of a child, John Coulthard aged 0, in 1940. She became a stage actress and changed her name to Stella Linden. Her second marriage was to my father, Terence Duff (a.k.a. Patrick Desmond), in Paddington, London in 1948 and in 1951 she left him to make her fortune in Hollywood. There is no record of a fortune having been made, but if you Google her name you'll get plenty of hits on her theatre life in the U.K. and her script-writing career in the States. A third marriage (of convenience?) in Mexico c1952/3 is known of but not recorded or confirmed.

All the best,
Chris

Thanks for responding Chris.
The Stella my brother lived with was a Brit and was about my mother's age at the time I met her in 1971 - about 50. That would put her birth year near 1920. She was an author and I think he said an actress, but when I met her she was overweight (as you saw) with greying hair, beautiful skin. If you are interested in having me query my brother for details I will do so. He was interested in finding out what happened to her during subsequent years and I said I would look.
Thanks. Barb

Barb, you're now getting my interest! No doubt you've been Googling Stella's name and found something of interest.

I'm attaching a couple of publicity photos of Stella in the role of Sadie Thompson in a play called "Rain", based on a Somerset Maugham story, in 1948/49. Tim Turner was her love interest on and off the stage at the time, having just discarded John Osborne. As it happened, John Osborne was back-stage as assistant stage manager, and her husband (my father) was the play's director. So she was a bit of a gal!!

Yes, please! Squeeze your brother for all the details he can remember. If this really is my Stella, I want to know everything, because her life in the States is almost a closed book and there are others in the family who have also been searching for information.

Unfortunately, being of an age and not totally computer literate, I can't find a way to attach the photos. They are on a .pdf file and this site doesn't accept this type of file. Please email me at chris.duff3@sympatico.ca and I'll email them to you.

All the best,
Chris
