Hi. My Kaufmann's immigrated from Grindelwald, Switzerland around 1870 through Ohio to Indiana. My immigrants were Johannes "John" KAUFMAN/KAUFMANN Sr. (1819-1884), his wife Magdalena NUSBAUM (1829-1901) and their kids, including my gg-grandfather Peter (1860-1932). John's father was Christian KAUFMANN Jr. born around 1790 in Grindelwald and his mother was Magdalena KAUFMANN (not sure if that's her maiden name or not) (1789-1852). Christian Sr. (1758-?) married Anna ZIMMERMANN. If this sounds like it could be your family also, I would love to trade info. I have my direct line going back to the early 1500's, but not much else.

Am looking for information on Bohren family from Grindelwald. My gggrandfather came to Iowa from there in 1862.
Johann Bohren b 1807, wife Anna, Johann Jr.b 1832, Katharina b. 1848 m. Jacob Egli in Muscatine, IA 1869 (my ggrandmother), Margaretta b 1842.

I noticed you had Bohren on your surname list and put that together with Gridelwald hoping...

Have copy of ships register from 1862.

My dad rememebers a Charlie Bohren from when he was a kid but does not know relation...

I have two places where the BOHREN family ties into my KAUFMANN line, but it is long before our families immigrated. My 7g-grandmother was Elsbeth BOHREN b. c1673 probably in Grindelwald, m. 1690 in Grindelwald to Bartholome "Bartsch" Sr. KAUFMANN. They had 13 children that I know of. My 9g-grandmother was Elsi BOHREN b. c1620 in Grindelwald, m. 1640 in Grindelwald to Christian Sr. KAUFMANN. They had 9 children that I know of. However, I haven't found either of their parents or any siblings yet, so I don't know what, if any, connection there is to your BOHREN family. But in looking for them I have noticed several other BOHREN women married in to the KAUFMANN family as well (some in the mid-1800's), so I will try to post it if I run across any interesting info concerning connections between the two families.

I have enough info to pursue swiss records. There was a Johann Bohren as mayor of Gridelwald ~1830-1840 and could have been my gggrandfather but obviously the Bohrens in that town go back quite a ways.
It does not seem to be a very common surname in the US however in that spelling.

If they are from Gridelwald there is little doubt there is a relation. I am still trying to decipher the process of querying the available Swiss records to trace mine. My Egli roots are from Bern also and are most likely from Grindelwald as well.

Thanks for the feedback.

They came to American in 1880 to Ohio. We have a big blue geneology book, "Kaufmann Families from Grindelwald, Switzerland." It was done as a research project. Please contact me for more information. I would like to compare notes. Bruce Kaufmann (727) 320-8721 (cell)

Is that the Christian KAUFMANN that was born 3-Jul-1854 to Hans & Elizabeth KAUFMANN and died 28-Jul-1925 in Bedford, Ohio? If that's your Christian KAUFMANN that would make us related, but quite distantly, something like 8th cousins once removed, the common ancestors being Peter & Katharina (GSTEIGER) KAUFMANN (both born in Grindelwald in the 1640's). Does that fit with what you have? My branch of the family is descended through Peter & Katharina's son Bartholome Sr. (through Walthard, Christian Sr., Christian Jr., Johannes "John" Sr., and Peter J. KAUFMANN in Grindelwald). John Sr., his wife Magdalena, and their eldest 9 children immigrated to Wayne County, Ohio in 1869 where they had a couple more kids.

I believe we have ONE of the Kaufmann lines from Grindelwald tested in the Kauffman surname project at FamilyTreeDNA This would include a Peter would settled into Ohio in the mid-1800's. There are two apparently branches for this line documented back to about 1515. So far the other known unrelated Kaufmann's in Grindelwald have not been tested. Apparently that city is overrun with Kaufmann's.
