Debra,I am responding to a posting of yours from back in Dec 04 ref: Gately family. One of my Cornelius ancestors, Madison Cornelius, the early 1800's in S.C., married America Gately. A relative of mine told me a number of years ago that a Cornelius had married a Cherokee Indian named Gately. He also told me that they had moved from S.C. to Rome,Ga., then on to Oneota, Al. Do you happen to have any information on America Gately in your family records? I was also told that the name Gately is found amoung the Cherokee Indians in Cherokee,N.C. I would appreciate any info that you might have. thanks, John Cornelius

Debra, I am responding to your post of 2004 on Gately of N. Caro. and Tenn. Though Gately is not my direct line, I have some information on them. John Gately's wife, Jemima (Mime) Mercer, I believe (with no strong proof) is the sister of my John Mercer who was married to Lucretia Johnston and they both died in Caldwell Co., Ky. While doing research on the Mercer line I ran across an article in a No. Carolina newspaper that recounts the trial of James Mercer, Jemima's father, when he was tried for killing his son in law, John Gately. It's fascinating and if you don't have it, I'd be happy to share a copy with you. You can email me directly at Let me know. Martha

Deb, After my last post, I seem to remember corresponding with you in the past about the article. If so, I apologize. I haven't done research in about six years and so have forgotten a lot of stuff. :-)

Hi Martha,
I also am just renewing my research into this family line after putting it aside for some time.
Do you still have the newspaper report on the trial? If so, I'd love a copy. this week will be really busy at the ranch (I'm down in Mexico at present) but I'll try to pull my files and refresh my memory on this line. Let me know if you need any further infor. I can help you with.

From pages 852-853 of book:

William I. [T?] Davis was born in Montgomery County, N.C., July 3, 1821, and is the son of Young and Sarah (Gatley) Davis. The father was born in North Carolina, October 18, 1800, and the mother in Virginiain the same year. The father died in South Carolina in 1864, the mother in 1866. They married in North Carolina in 1819; in 1849 they moved to South Carolina, where they lived until they died. The father followed the blacksmith’s trade in connection with farming. Our subject is the oldest of seven children; by his own efforts he secured a good education. In 1847 he moved to Tennessee and settled in Hardeman County; two
years later he moved to Fayette County, and settled ten miles southeast of Somerville, where he lived about twenty-eight years and in 1878 moved to his ‘present farm. Mr. Davis now owns over 900 acres of valuable land in Fayette County. He was married the first time November 29, 1844, to Miss Patience Harris, who died November 20, 1864, leaving eight children. December 1865, he married Mrs. Pamelia C. (Morris) Snow; no children have been born to this last union. Mr. Davis, his wife and all of the children are members of the Methodist Church. He is a Democrat, and is a man of fine character and unusual energy.

So after doing some Google searching, I found you on the internet, with an interest in the GATELY familiy in Orange/Caswell/Person Co, NC. A William Gateley died and left a will in 1794/1799 in Person Co, NC. It is my understanding that the will names a daughter Ann and two sons, Joseph and John, both appointed as executors of the will. In 1800, a Joseph Gateley appears in the above Richmond Co, NC. By 1810, an Elizabeth Gateley appears in Richmond Co, NC. Could this be his widow? Could this Joseph Gateley be the son of William Gately, who died in 1799 in Person Co, NC. He was over 45 years of age in the 1800 census, that puts him being born before 1765, which makes him a real possibility for being the son of William Gateley. Could he POSSIBLY be the father of my Sarah Gateley and father-in-law of my Young Davis?

I look forward to hearing from any one with knowledge of the Gateleys of Richmond Co, NC.
