My name is Colonel Joseph R. Sales USMC (Retired) and I am looking for my
>grandfather who was:
>JAMES MONROE SALES b.Jan 02, 1848, d. ( ? ) and buried at Pruitt's Chapel
>Cemetery in Vernon Parish, La..
>From the 1870 census, it appears that my grandfather might have been
>associated with a family named SMART. The reference is:
>1870 Federal Census
>Sabine parish, Louisiana
>Page 11, micro copy 594, roll 528.
>Post Office Box is Many, Louisiana.
>Family # 83.
>The family name is for a woman named SMART, as head of household and a
JAMES SALES, aged 24, as a member of that household working as a farm
laborer. From my copy of the census it is difficult to tell just what the
first names
of the SMART household were but the head of the household appears to be
"Pamaline" who was 32 yrs old then and farming 300 acres. She was born in
Mississippi. The three children are a female (13), a female (10) and a male
named William (5) and all born in Louisiana. I can't make out the two
daughter's names.
>Interestingly, my father JOSEPH GILBERT SALES settled in Tyler County,
>Texas, near Warren, and built his house there with the help of a man named
>SMART who was, apparently, a long-time friend who also settled in Texas.
>This may have been the son (William) of the woman who was the head of the
>indicated above although it's hard to tell whether the third child listed
>a male or female due to an overstrike. The name, however, seems clearly to
be William. The first two children are listed as females.
>I have been unable to trace my ancestry beyond my grandfather JAMES MONROE
>SALES who might have been the James Sales listed in this census. I would
appreciate any information you might have.
>I also have no information on my grandmother MARY JANE WEST SALES, the wife
>of JAMES MONROE SALES. I believe she was also from the area around "the
>mouth of the Anacoco" and she, like my grandfather, is buried at Pruitt's Chapel
>I would appreciate any information that will confirm that my
>grandfather is the one associated with the SMART household mentioned in
this census.

Simper Fi, Colonel Sales. I have researched the West family as it pertains to my own family tree in Vernon Parish. My Great grandfather, James Stuart Johnson, married Lydia Crews West, d/o Madison West and Martha Lucretia Neal, in 1871. Their marriage was recorded in what was then Sabine Parish. They were married at Madison West's home in the Silver Creek Springs area, which is now Vernon Parish. The Neal & Smart families are connected also.
I would be interested in your West research and will gladly share info with you. I also have some connection for Tyler County research. My wife is from Jasper. (Martindale)

Thanks for the response John, and Simper Fi back atcha...I retired in Nov.,1989, after 30 yrs. in the Corps (and four in the Navy before that). Always glad to hook up with a Marine.
It seems that our connection may be via the WEST family branch, judging by your response. My fraternal grandmother was MARY JANE WEST SALES (m. JAMES MONROE SALES Jan 11, 1872) and I have very little info on her and nothing on her ancestors. She was born July 25, 1856 and died Mar 15, 1920. Census records show she could neither read nor write. Her father was born in La. and mother in Miss.
Interestingly, a 1880 Federal Census of Tyler County, Texas shows my grandparents, mentioned above, and the next family on the census is a JANE WEST as head of household, age 48 with two children (sons WILLIAM B.-19 and JAMES R.-16). I am wondering whether this JANE WEST was the mother of my GM Mary Jane? Mary Jane is shown as being 23 at this census so the ages work out for a Mother/Daughter relationship. I do know that by the 1900 Census my grandparents were back in Vernon Parish, La. where the family stayed. you have any records showing a JANE WEST (married name, I assume)who would have been born in 1842/3, or the two sons?
The Census Reference is:
Tyler County, Texas, Precinct #4
Micro copy T9, Roll 1329
Dated June 1st, 1880
Family #'s 231 and 232
Incidentally, I was born in Tyler County, Texas (near Warren) and grew up there and in Hardin and Jasper counties (grades 5 thru 11 in Buna). I'm now retired in Omaha, Ne. so "it's a fur piece to my old stompin grounds." And, there is no census repository locally. Any help or leads would be appreciated. Joe Sales

You mentioned Greer; there was a Jack Greer who
had a Church on the Fort Polk Entrance Road in
Vernon Parish, back in the 1950's.They called it
Petersburg ( or some such spelling).

I also with to school at Pickering in V.P.,
Louisiana with some Brister's; I think that
there were also some Bristers that lived on
Termal Road in Leesville back then also.

I finished School in 1956 at Pickering.

Dear John Johnson,

I am working on a USMC reunion for my boss, William Sitar, who served in Okinawa 1959-1960. We received the roster from the USMC and through other Marines, a name Johnnie Johnson shows up on my list of people who served. Could that be you?!???

Hi Donna
Your email address would not work so I looked up the msg board post you sent me. I hope you get this.
I was not on Okinawa until 1961. Prior to that I was in Camp Fuji, Japan. I was on Okinawa about 3 wks and was in Northern Training Area and Camp Hansen. I remember supporting a Helicopter Squadron from MAG16 in Futema...that's about it.
