I am interested in the chairmaking trade in Canada, so all chairmakers are part of my research. I found John listed in Lovell's Directory of 1857 (chairmaker, Cavan St., Port Hope), and Thomas Clouston is listed in Mitchell's Directory of 1864 (chairmaker, Cavan st. Port Hope). John is listed in the industrial census in 1871 as proprietor of a cabinet factory in the census district of Ontario North (Ontario County rather than province) and subdistrict Brock (twp.) That is all I have. I would appreciate anything that you are willing to share that pertains to his chair factory or his chairs.

The online index to the 1871 Ontario Census at http://130.15.161.100/census/index.html lists your John Clouston born: Scotland circa 1825, occupation: cabinet maker, etc. & his household at Brock township, Durham County(Ontario North district), Ontario, Canada.

My Great-grandmother, Mary Ann Hartnett (Sep 23, 1845 - Oct 17, 1916) married July 29, 1867 in Port Hope, Ontario her first husband, Thomas Clouston. Thomas Clouston born: Ontario circa 1833, family origin: "Scotch", occupation: furrier, etc & his household are listed at Port Hope, Hope Township, Durham County, Ontario in the 1871 Ontario Census. They had 3 children, but unfortunately one child, Michael Alexander Clouston born Nov 13, 1869 died within the year prior to the 1871 census. Thomas Clouston died before 1875 in Port Hope. His widow remarried & moved to Kinmount, Ontario with their surviving two children.

I would appreciate any info you might have on Thomas Clouston's family & ancestry to pass on to my cousins. Please contact me by email to share research.

Thank You!

My ancestors lived in the Cannington area in Brock Twp. Ontario Co. and in the family photo album there is a photograph of a young girl labelled Mary Ann Clouston. I tried to figure out who she was and also stumbled across the name Samis.

Could she possibly be your Mary A. and do you know where she lived after her marriage?

Thanks,
Karen

Mary Ann CLOUSTON 28 Mar 1851 - 8 Jan 1923 and George SAMIS 4 Nov 1849 - 26 Feb 1936, both born in Cannington and died in Toronto, were my children's GG grandparents! Alfred SAMIS 1873 - 1925 was their eldest son ... a younger son Harry Clinton SAMIS 25 May 1885 - 20 June 1948, born in Cannington and died in Vancouver, was my children's great grandfather. I'm sure that your photo must be our Mary Ann ... I have a photo that I think is George SAMIS and Mary Ann CLOUSTON ... it would be great to compare your photo and mine.

Hi Linda,

How exciting! The picture of Alf is with my gt-grandma's sister and 3 other of my relatives so they must have been friends. I can't find any indication that they were related but they all lived in the same area.

Could you please send a short message to my email address:
jessandrak@netscape.net
and then I'd be happy to send the photos.

Hi Karen

Thank you for your reply to my post. I hope we have a link here.

My great grandmother, Mary Ann Clouston (1846-1926), lived in Little Britain, Rupert's Land (now Manitoba) after her marriage to Henry Martin Johstone. That area is now a part of the town of Lockport. I'm told that her father's name was John but have never been able to learn what her mother's name was. One eldrely relative said he thought that her grandparents were William Clouston and Catherine Campbell...but of that I am not certain. She was my grandmother's mother and I know little of that side of the family. I would dearly love to be able to track them as I have been able to with the Gunn family of Little Britain (my grandfather's side), all the way back to years BC!

Hello Debbie,

I don't think this is the same Mary Anne Clouston considering the location and the fact that a photo of her SAMIS son is in the same family album.

Of course I'll be in touch if I turn out to be wrong.

My grand mother Is the third child of Thomas Clouston and Mary Hartnett, Elixabeth Jane Clouston Dillon. One of Elizabeth's children was my father, Herbert John Dillon.
She raised her five children in Buffalo NY and most of her adult.life. was very hard as she was widowed young.

I would be happy to exchange information with you on this matter.
