Surnames: Romer, Terwilliger
I am looking for the ancestry of John Orrent Romer of Mamakating, Sullivan Co, NY who married Cornelia, dau of Ira Terwilliger and Maria Tice. Cornelia's age is rather variable in the census records.

In 1850 he was 16 and living with Jucreose and Mary L. Bennet and family as a laborer

I do not find him in the 1860 census and have tried a bunch of spellings.

In 1870 he is 36 in Mamakating, a farmer. Wife is Cornelia, age 42. Children: Mary E (13), Chauncey (10), George V. (8), and Francis T (3)

In 1880 he is 44 in Mamakating. Wife is Cornelia, age 48. Children: Chauncy, George V and Frank

In 1900 I don't find him. However, Cornelia Terwilliger, age 70, is living alone, widowed and next door to Peter Terwilliger. In other census records Peter is living next door to Silas Terwilliger. I can't connect the Terwilligers.

I am interested in both the Romers' and Terwilligers' ancestry and/or familial connections.

1875 census has the family living in Orange County, Wallkill.

Says Cornelia was born in Orange County.

In 1840 in Sullivan County there are 2 Romer families with a male 5 years old, the age John would have been.

Thomas Romer in Thompson

Wm Romer in Mamakating

I found this on using 'john o romer' as the search phrase.

Republican Watchman - Monticello, NY - October 5, 1895.

The date itself is not on the top of the newspaper page but in checking four pages before - October 5 1895 was the date of the Death Notice on page 4. The paper was printed on Friday and the notice states Monday *so* counting back he could have died on Monday September 30, 1895.

The image is attached - here is the text which shows the children you have listed. Chauncey is NOT listed as a survivor (Neither is wife Cornelia).

John O. Romer died of heart disease,
Monday at the residence of his daughter,
Mrs. Charles S. Miller, at Bloomingburgh.
His age was sixty-one
years and seventeen days. Mr. Rom-
er was born in the town of Thompson,
Sullivan county. He resided tn Burlingham
until twenty-four years ago,
when he removed to Bloomingburgh.
For the past two years he has made,
his home with his son. Mr. Frank T.
Romer, of Mlddletown. Mr. Romer
is survived by three children, Mary
E., wife of Charles S. Miller and Geo.
B. of Bloomingburgh, and Frank T.
Rome of Middletown.

*There was a typo w/Frank's last name on the last line - Rome not Romer.

I will see what else I can find.

One odd thing - I am finding a few Probate notices for 'Cornelia Terwilliger' - died March 8, 1936.

Cornelia Terwilliger of 145 Villa Avenue, Yonkers; died March 8 at (G)oshen (first letter cut off).

The executrix is a niece - Marjory Tice. Monies are left to nieces/nephews John, Arthur, Grant Terwilliger, Edna De Gomvo and Jessie Harris.

NOWHERE are the children of John and Cornelia Romer mentioned - not even grandchildren (if any).

Could this be an entirely different Cornelia Terwilliger than the one that married John Romer?

The probate notices were all found on using the search phrase: cornelia terwilliger.

Hmmm? Don't ya love these jigsaw puzzles? :)

John O Romer had a daughter, Mary E Romer who married Charles Storey Miller (whose father was Leartus Miller). They had a child named Herbert Chauncy Miller (my grandfather) who married Mary Maltby of Northford Conneciticut. They had a child Dr. Herbert Chauncy Miller Jr., my father. We would love to know more about the Romers and the Millers. All information stops at Leartus Miller.
