Obituary from the Carnegie Herald Newspaper, Carnegie OK

Rites Held Sunday for Alden Pioneer

Services were held at the Greenfield Mennonite church Monday afternoon for Henry Unruh, for many years a resident of the Alden community, who died at his home near there about six o’clock Friday. He became suddenly ill Friday morning and his death was wholly unexpected.

Mr. Unruh settled on a homestead nine miles south of Carnegie in 1901 where the family lived 31 years, enduring the hardships of pioneer life. In 1932 he sold his farm and retired from work, securing a small tract three miles east of Alden where he and Mrs. Unruh made their home until his death.

Henry A. Unruh was born December 1, 1864 in Poland, Russia and departed this life September 18, 1936, aged 71 years, 10 months, and 18 days. At the age of 10 he emigrated with his parents to America, settling on a farm near Mound Ridge, Kans. In 1874. Here he was baptized and became a member of the Mennonite church in 1887 and remained a member until his death.

On January 29, 1888 he was joined in marriage to Anna Nightengale. To this Union were born 10 children, four sons and six daughters; one son and two daughters died in infancy.

Mr. And Mrs. Unruh first made their home near Mound Ridge, living there six years. Then they moved with their family to a farm near Pauls Valley, Okla. Living there seven years before coming to Alden at the opening of Caddo county.

He leaves to mourn his departure his companion with whom he had shared joy and sorrow for 48 years; his three sons and four daughters and their families, including 24 grandchildren. Also two brothers and four sisters and a host of other relatives and friends.

Great suggestion, Jack. Also if you are in the vicinity of Goessel you are only a few miles from the Mennonite Library and Archives at Bethel College in North Newton, KS. They have hundreds of church records and family histories as well as shiplists etc. And they are across the street from the Kaufman Museum which houses many more items of interest and is worth the visit if you have Mennonite ancestry.

Thank you, Rita Martin. I just spent two and 1/2 days in
Hesston, McPherson, Goessel, Moundridge with a side
trip to Cottonwood Falls in Chase Cty, Kansas. 1020 miles
round trip from Fort Worth, Texas,

My list of priorities included Bethel College & Kaufman
BUT they were at the bottom of the list and time ran out.
