Hi Dick. You haven't heard from me since about 1999 - long before your more recent difficulties, from which you have emerged and have thrived!

We had talked c1999 about the SANFORD family of NJ that had migrated to Town of Mendon in 1806 & 1810- mainly the family of Peter and Nelly (VanNess) SANFORD, whose children were Peter b. 1783 (who had married in NJ and stayed there), Thomas b. 1785 m. 1825 Catherine RALL, Jacob VanNess Sanford b. _____ m. Naomey, children b. 1812 & 1814, Jacob d. 1817, Harriet b. 1795 m. John LORD, and William b. 1797 d. 1859.

In April of 2012, I went through my file on this family, removing pages no longer applicable, and found Two Pages I had not seen in years, and they sent me on a successful search for details about WILLIAM SANFORD, for whom I had no information at all (!)

But there is one piece of information for which I could use your brain power - if possible: Finding the maiden name of HULDA, who m. William Sanford before the birth of their first daughter in 1826 (- or later!). I believe they also had a son William b. 1828. I know of a second daughter b. 1830.

In the 1830 Census, William, his wife and 2 daughters were listed as being in Town of Bloomfield, Ontario Co., but don't know when they moved from Mendon.

HULDA was b. 1796, d. 1841 age 45 - from Peoria, Illinois records - but was only listed as 'Mrs. William Sanford', with no maiden name shown.

Because of the Obit for their second daughter, I learned that the family left NY for IL in 1833, and I believe William had a land grant in IL based upon his service in the War of 1812.

I have a fairly complete "report" about this family, EXCEPT for the Maiden name for first wife HULDA.... Can you advise me how to search for this in Mendon records? I contacted the Mendon Town Historian but didn't get a reply. I also contacted Town of Bloomfield Historian, but received no helpful advice.

Dick, I am so happy to learn of your recovery and hope you are feeling much better now! You are a treasure to the people of your area!! Blessings, Pat Sanford Brown in MI.

It gets hard trying to find ladies' maiden names. I have a bunch that I have been stuck on for many years.

About the only thing that I could think to look through was "Pioneers of Mendon" which was a series of newspaper columns in the early 1920s by Anah B. Yates. One of the things that was included in the columns were early church records for both Mendon and Bloomfield. There wasn't any record of the marriage of William and Hulda. There are very few records of those early times.

Diane Ham works a full time job and only part time as the Historian. She is probably backed up.

I'm sorry that I can't be of any other help.
