Surnames: Chisholm, Munro, Wilson
My 4th Ggrandfather is John Chisholm b. 1762 in Strathglass, Scotland. He married Nancy Munro (also born Strathglass), in 1784 in Cornwall, Ont. Died June 6 1825 in Glengarry, Ont. Nancy died April 14 1839. They are buried at St. Andrews Church Cemetery, Glengarry.
Their son Donald,(my 3rd Gg.) b.1798 in Glengarry, Married Harriet Wilson (widow) at Fort George, Ont. Mar. 6 1823. Donald died July 5, 1848.Harriet died Oct. 24 1859. They are buried at Limehouse Ont.
I haven't yet found any other children of John & Nancy.Judging by the marriage and birth dates Donald likely had other siblings.
Two children of Donald & Harriet were: John Wilson b. Sept. 16 1823 and Emily Jane b. 1825.

I would be grateful for any other information about these families.

Hi Tal,
Thanks for that info. It fills some blanks I had. I just came across the Glengarry board yesterday.

I plan to visit the St Andrews Church cemetery in the fall. Any tips?

Thanks again,

It is best to keep messages on the board for others to read and to add to or comment about.

The reason I asked about the lot and concession is that when doing research it is very helpful in sorting out a bunch of Chisholm's. If you were to have it before going to St. Andrew's you should then drop in to the Land Office in Alexandria and have them print off an abstract on that lot. From this you can see the original grant as well as all subsequent transactions such as deeds, bills of sale and maybe if you are lucky a Last Will which I had found for my GGGF.

I noticed in my book on Glengarry marriages the following:

David Chisholm son of John and Anna Monro married at St. Raphael's 22-01-1816 to a Mary MacRae daughter of Duncan and Anna Chisholm.

Alexander Chisholm son of John and Nancy Monro married at St. Raphael's 08-10-1844 Elizabeth MacIntosh daughter of Alexander and Janet MacDougald.

Hugh Chisholm son of John and Anna Monroe of St. Andrew's married at St. Raphael's 04-02-1823 to Ann MacDonald daughter of Hugh MacDonald and Margaret MacDonald

In Father John's Diary of Death's there is a Alexander Chisholm who drowned 1860 son of David Chisholm, son of John Chisholm North Branch 9th October.

Also there is a David Chisholm who died 12 Jan 1843 of North Branch.

Also there is a Margaret Chisholm who died Sept 16, 1846 wife of Rory ?? North Branch. * added Dougald MacDonald, son of Angus, son of Dougald, son of Ranald, son of Donald Ban at River Baudet.

Also a John Chisholm died 1857 Cornwall Lot ? The Branch son of John May 27.

I also noticed on the Mormon site that your John Chisholm is shown married to Nancy Munro. It shows he was born abt. 1762 and she 1766 both in Tain, Ross-Shire, Scotland and both died North Branch Glengarry and buried St. Andrew's. It shows she died 1839 and her father was David b: abt 1740 and mother Nancy MacKay born 1744.

I looked for your John Chisholm in my Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada and there are many who came and all from Strathglass but all came to Nova Scotia. Is it possible that he came by way of the US as a loyalist?

In the Petitions, Land Grants book there is a David Chisholm and Land Grant No. 3632 in Cornwall and being the son of John Chisholm of Lot 1 Concession 7 Cornwall a U.E. Loyalist. Also a Duncan Chisholm, son of Donald Chisholm a UEL Charlottenburgh. Also a James Chisholm and Land Grant 1502 Cornwall son of John Chisholm UEL. 200 acres year of 1825. There are Land Grants 3638, 40 and 41 to John Jr, Hugh and Ann Chisholm sons and daughter of a John Chisholm of Lot 1, Con 7 Cornwall a UEL. There is a Roderick Chisholm son of John Chisholm a UEL.

This John Chisholm UEL may or may not be yours.

Hi Barbara

In the book the Kennedys-MacDiarmids-McDermids-Munros and other Glengarry-Stormont Pioneers by R.B. Campbell and Douglas McDermid, ISBN 0-919303-99-4 - on page 465 & 466 there is a piece on Nancy Munro & John Chisolm, but it does not list any children. Nancy is the descendant of David Munro & Nancy McKay. John & Nancy are buried in the Old St. Andrews West cemetery at St. Andrews, which is south of Cornwall.
The following is from St Andrews West Catholic Cemetery in the files of Alex Fraser

42 To the Memory of Nancy Munro wife of John Chisholm, daughter of David Munro, pioneer and Nancy McKay who settled on Lot 2, 8th Concession of Cornwall in 1789 - all U.E.L.
(Nancy Munro 1766 - 1839)
Sacred to the Memory of John Chisholm native of Scotland, died at his
residence on the North Branch June 1825 aged 76 yrs, - [son of Wm Chisholm 1 - 7th Cornwall Twp]

If you would like to borrow the above McDermid book on interlibrary loan go to
Alex has donated over a hundred local books to the "The Mid-Continent Public Library" for interlibrary loan or you can try your local library.

Alex's book title page is if you would like to look at it.

Hope this helps

Hi Tal,

John and Nancy and her family all came to Canada from Tryon County N.Y. at the time of the revolutionary war.
The names you mention in the land grants, excepting Duncan, match the names of some of their 11 children.

My father had told me that his ancestors came to Canada as U.E.L.'s. I now wish I had listened to him with both ears.

The names I have of John & Nancy's children are as follows:
William b.1785
David b. 1787
John b. 1791
Hugh b. 1793
Ann Nancy b. 1797
Donald b. Apr. 6 1798 - Glengarry ( my 4th Gr. grandfather)
Ronald b. 1800
Alexander Robert b. abt. 1805
Barbara abt 1806
Roderick abt 1807
James abt 1809

Thanks for all your help.

I hope everyone remembers that Nancy is a Highland nickname for Anna or Ann(e). It would appear these two Chisholms are siblings
