Updated information on Gornik research: discovered that my grandfather's (John Gornik, b. May 16, 1872 in the village of Jelovec, near Globelje, Slovenia; d. May 14, 1946, Lorain, Ohio; m. Johanna Novak August 15, 1905 at St. Vitus Church, Cleveland, Ohio) parents names might be: father - Blaz Gornik (with the accent over the 'z'); mother - Neza Gornik, roj. Vesel, b. abt. 1839.

Believe there was a boy-cousin named Thomas Vesel. Another researcher has a grandmother named Frances Vesel Levstik of Kankakee, IL, who had a brother named Thomas Vesel. Could be the same person...

Believe there was a brother named Kveril, and a brother named Ceril (two different handwritings).

Believe John Gornik's first cousin was Valentin Gornik, also of Cleveland, Ohio (b. 1865 in Globelje). Valentin married Marjeta Levstik (1865-1955). Children include Rose Gornik Brezec (1894 - ????); Rudolf (1895 - 1972); Frank (1896 - ????); Anton (1904 - 1948); Mary Gornik Kocjancic; Angela (1899 - 1899). Cannot connect him and his family to my tree until I know how his parents are related to my grandfather.

ANY information about any of these families would be greatly appreciated. Will share everything I have. Lots of photos, undated and unidentified. Thanks.

my great-grandmother was Gertrude Gornik marr Gasper Mihelic in Europe. Came to Minn., had family then returned. Her dau Caroline marr Joe Samsa and came to Cleveland. They claim a relationship to Cleveland Gorniks and Mihelic/Mihelichs. 3 of Caroline's brothers were in Clev in the 20's. How were they related to Valentine?

Jamie, I would LOVE to help you. I am greatly interested in the northern Illinois Gorniks but have not been able to make much progress. I tried to find Guenstei, Austria and was unsuccessful. I have four Gornik lines, not yet related to me, who have three generations of Johns - and my own Dad was James. Please feel free to write to me directly and give me an idea of date ranges for birth/death/immigration. What chance is there that your ancestors were Slovenian and that the records you're looking at were created during the Austro-Hungarian Empire where EVERYBODY was from "Austria"? It would depend on the dates. Do you have alternate cities, villages, parishes or towns? Thanks for the contact. Keep in touch.

I suggest you consider Guenstei, Austria may be Gutenstein in Karnten as shown on 1910 Austrian maps. It was later known as Gustanj, Yugoslavia and is today Ravne na Koroskem, Slovenia. It is very near the present Austrian border in northern Slovenia. The Slovene on-line telephone directory lists one Gornik living in Ravne and another nearby. http://tis.telekom.si/default.asp?LANG=EN

Good luck,
Ron Pozin

Hello,
My name is Joseph Gornik and my older brother is John. We live in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. My father's name is John, My Grandfather's name is John, and Grandmother's name is Sophie. My family is from Poland and state an argument separated my grandfather from his brothers. Apparently, my family is not originally from Poland but moved from Austria (or region) during the first World War. Older lineage is my great-aunt Saint Mary Faustina Kowalska.
