OBIT Mrs Eva Delander

(Eva Elizabeth Swanson)

Madrid Register Oct. 18.1917.

Mrs. Eva Delander, the last survivor of the company of
immigrants (42 in number) who came from Sweden in 1846 and located
near Madrid Iowa, passed away on Monday evening, October 8th, after
a brief illness. Her maiden name was Eva Elizabeth Swanson.

She was born April 11, 1836 in Ulrika parish, Lindkoping
province, Sweden.

In 1846 when she was but 1O years old, she was in the company
of 42 persons that left Sweden with Jefferson county, Iowa, as
their destination. They embarked on the freight ship sailship
Augusta which left Gothenburg, Sweden, in May that year. After nine
weeks and three days on the Atlantic they landed in New York. from
there they went by steamboat up the Hudson river to Albany from
Albany on the Erie canal to Buffalo; from there on Lake Erie to
Toledo, Ohio; across the state of Ohio on canals to Cincinnati; on
the Ohio river to Cairo, Ill., and thence up the Mississippi river
to St. Louis and Keokuk, (Iowa). The Journey from Keokuk was made
by team and on foot, through a new and unsettled country where they
encountered numerous tribes of Indians who roamed at will,

The party followed the Des Moines river instead of going
north from Keokuk, to the Skunk river and thence on to the Peter
Cassell settlement. This mistake brought them out of their way and
no doubt it was providential. Thus it was that the first Swedish
settlers came to Boone county, Iowa.

The subject of this sketch was married to Erick
Dalander, Oct.22; 1852., To this union the following children were
born: Mrs. A. Nelson, Mrs. A. T. Jacobson, who died in 1912. Mrs.
A. M. Sundberg, E. P. Dalander, S. A. Dalander, Carl August who
died in 1906, Zacharias W. and Minnie Maria; one daughter Clara,
died in infancy.

Her husband died Jan.29, 1893.

She is mourned by 6 children, one stepson, John Jacob
Dalander of Kansas, 20 grand children and 7 great grandchildren.
Also by a host of other relatives and friends.

Peace be to her memory.

The following is by Leslie Johnson, great grandson of John Segrin.

(Another item in this paper mentions that the party of 42
Swedes arrived in Boone county in Sept. 1846.)

Eva Elizabeth Swanson was the sister of John Segrin who
arrived in Madrtd, Ia. in the 1860s. Since John was in the Swedish
Army, he had to change his name, as anything with a Son on the end
was unacceptable. His name in Swedish was Sjogren, which was
changed to Segrin when he entered the U.S.

According to information I have, so far, Eva Swanson's brother Anders Svensson came to the U.S. in 1846 on the same ship as Eva. I believe her parents names were Sven Svensson and Margareta Larsdotter. This information is from microfilm, Ulrika Pr., Ostrgt. Sweden and "Swedish Passenger Arrivals in New York 1820-1850" by Nils William Olson.

Eva Elizabeth Swanson Dalander is my husband's great grandmother.
