Guy Family in North Carolina - PLEASE HELP!!!

My Great-grandmother was Annie Mae Guy. Her Father was Buck or Bush Guy according to her death certificate. SHe was born in North Carolina, and married a Walter Blackman Phillips. Walter is not burried with Annie, which leads me to consider the possibility that he may be buried wherever they came from. They are both definitely of American Indian genetics, according to their own testimony and looks. If anyone can help me locate this family before their move to South Carolina, revealing their family origins (early ancestors / Indian - European - Other nationalities) I have searched high and low for this part of my family with no avail until someone gave me a heads-up about the Guys in Macon being Catawba. PLEASE check all records you can! Blessing to you all!

Could it be Buckner Guy? Married Sylva Jeffers 7-16-1810 in Orange Co NC. My Gibsons are connected to these Guys. This Gibson family came to Macon County with the Guys, Jeffreys and others whose racial status in official records fluctuated between "mulatto" and "white." However, they apparently were Saponi (Occaneechi) Indians. I don't find your Anna, but have made contact with other Guy family and maybe they can help. Drop me a line at

Have you tried searching in Orange Co., NC. I do believe I've
seen the "Guy" name while searching for my NC Ancestors,
the Whitmores. I'd try the search engine and
then type in the inquiry space Guy Orange Co., NC. Also
I do find the name William Guy in an article "Why I Search
both Native & Melungeon Lines at
maybe just search on would do it. Anyway I'm
sure your Guy's and my Whitmores must have intermarried
with the Saponi indians found in an area known as the
"Piedmont" in the late 1700's and up through the 1870's.

Thanks so much for your input - I've come across some info before on the Saponi - Guy family ties. I tried to go to the web site you mentioned in your posting but I couldn't - please advise. It seems that there was a settlement of Guys that were listed as Catawbas in Macon, NC. Check out http://www/ for this info. Some of the descendents seem to think that we are not Saponi, but we are Catawba - at any rate, there is no denying the fact that my familty and myself are NOT euro-american only.... This web site links the saponi ties and Catawba documents by making the lingusitic connection - they both spoke siouian. The supposition is that the people they connected with overtime confused them as Catawbas because Catawbas were the closest with the same language, etc.... They have the 1872 Senate document that lists my g-gm and her father, Buck Guy.
Please don't hesitate to share any further info you have....
Your cousin -

Hi cousin John:
The search engine I mentioned "" is a free search engine that you can download onto your system. Also
there is a super version that you pay for. You can find all
kinds of information that is not available anywhere else so I'd
advise you to try it. Also here are a few email addresses for contacts of some of the info I got from copernic:
Try these and see if you find anything. Keep in touch,
cuz Sue from the great state of OK!!
Hey, by the way, if in your searches you run across my
grand daddy, Whitmore, Fore, or Garland keep me posted.
Good luck cuzn Sue

You gave no dates, but the only Guy I found that fits was Buckner Guy in Macon Co., NC. I will give you his census listings. Spelling will be as it appears on the census microfilm. Where I was unsure of the spelling, I have put a question mark.

1850 Macon Co., NC - Tennessee Valley - 100/102

GUY, Buckner, 54(?), b. Virginia
GUY, Polly, 26, b. Orange Co., NC
GUY, Judith, 24, b. Macon Co., NC.
GUY, Sylva, female, 22, b. Macon
GUY, Henry, 9, b. Macon (listed as "f" (female))

All were listed as "M" for Mulatto. Often, when giving their race for the census enumerator, if they had Indian blood, they would list Mulatto. It could be either mixed Black and White, or Indian and White.

Also in Macon County in 1850 was this Guy born in VA.

1850 Macon Co., NC - Savannah - 616/629

GUY, Jesse, 50, b. Virginia
GUY, Elizabeth, 45, b. Wake Co., NC
GUY, Lavina, 25, b. Macon
GUY, Elizabeth C., 18,b . Macon
GUY, Rachel, 13, b. Macon
GUY, David(?), 16, b. Macon (Daniel in index)
GUY, John L., 9, b. Macon
GUY, Eliza A., 2, b. Macon
All were listed as "M" (Mulatto)

1860 Macon Co., NC - Tennessee Valley - 16/16

GUY, Buckner F., 63, b. VA
GUY, Mary, 35, b. Orange Co., NC
GUY, Juda, 30, b. Macon
GUY, Silva, female, 25, b. Macon
GUY, Henry J., 19, b. Macon
GUY, Elizabeth, 8, b. Macon
GUY, George, 4, b. Macon
GUY, James, 50, b. Orange Co., NC
All were "M" (Mulatto)

1870 Macon Co., NC - Ellijay - 19/21

GUY, Mary, 50, b. VA
GUY, Juda, 40, b. VA
GUY, Sylva, female, 35, b. VA
GUY, Elizabeth, 20, b. NC
GUY, Geroge L., 15, b. NC
GUY, James, 58, b. Virginia
All were listed as White.

1880 Macon Co., NC - Ellijay - 46/46

GUY, George, 25, Single, b. NC
GUY, Juda, Mother, 50, Single, b. NC
GUY, James, Uncle, 60, b. NC, Single
GUY, Polly, Aunt, 55, Single, b. NC
