I think one of the scariest stories is that of the Mothman!!
I don't know how close to fact that Hollywood movie with Richard Gere was about it, but it scared the wits out of me.
I've Always loved scary movies though...The Shining, anything Alfred Hitchcock, Edgar Allen Poe was a favorite author when I was younger etc. Dracula, The Mummy (the old ones). They are all fun to watch this time of year.
I know the Mothman stories aren't Halloween stories but I think this time of year is as good as time as any to bring it up.

I agree with you that the Mothman was one of the scariest stories I've read.

I live in Australia and almost 30 years ago I left the city to live in the country. I lived in a reasonably comfortable shed for about six months while my home was being finished.
The ceiling of the shed was lined with a silver insulating foil and my only heating was a kerosene one with a domed burner. One night after reading the Mothman till the wee hours of the morning and scaring myself silly, I put off the light and crept into bed. Next thing there were two enormous glowing saucer like eyes staring down at me from the ceiling. It took me quite a few minutes to compose myself enough to realise that I'd left the kero heater on and the glowing dome was reflecting upon itself in the dark and casting a twin reflection onto the foil ceiling.

The really scary bit however came next morning when I went outside to collect the milk. There on the doorstep were dozens of the largest moths I'd ever seen in my life. Some of them were up to four inches long with a wing span to match.

Turned out I'd come to live in a area that had regular migrations of what are known as Bogong moths, quite harmless and once regarded as a delicacy by nomadic aborigines in the old days. I laugh about it now but it freaked me out whilst reading the Mothman. Trish.
