I am looking for the origination of the name Buhler in my family and any other information anyone has. I just found out my Buehler/Buhler family was named Schweizer before their name was Buhler (changed to Buehler in the US). We are Jewish. Before 1813 the Jews in Germany did not have family (or last) names as we do now. The ancestor known as Joseph Buehler I found out was never a Buhler. He was Joseph Schweizer 1746-1818?. His son, born Abraham "Joseph" Schweizer changed his name to Buhler when the Jews had to pick a "family name." He was born and lived in Kleinerdlingen, Germany. We don't know how the Schweizer name came, or why it was changed to Buhler. Two generations before Joseph Buhler, I just found out the "last name" used was Weyl. but we don't know if that last name was only used for one generation, as Salomon Weyl's son used the name Schweizer. I'd love to hear from anyone who can help.

Hi - My great-great grandmother was Bertha Buhler born 1843 - I'm not sure where exactly she was born, but I know she lived in Karlsruhe, Baden-Worttemburg, Germany and apparently had 16 children! Her husband was Leopold Reutlinger (born 1831). The Reutlinger children I don't think identified as jewish, but my grandfather did and became a Cantor and religious school teacher. I don't know if this was much of a help to you - but I am investigating that part of my family, as well... Good luck to you!

My Adlers (my great grandmother Bertha Bühler was born Bertha Adler) were from Baden Württemberg, but my Bühlers were from Bavaria. But who knows if someone was from there. Fanny Bühler Gutmann also had about 16 children. She was a sister of my great great grandfather Jakob. Because she had so many children, most Bühlers/Buehlers I find are related to her. How did you grandfather identify as Jewish? Bertha must have come from a Jewish family. I guess you know her parents' names.?? My email is lin2@cfl.rr.com. If you find more information, please let me know.

Do you by chance know the names Abraham or Brunhilde Adler? I wish I knew more about my great grandmother Bertha Buhler - but she was born, i think, 1843-1921. But I do think that Bertha's father was Jakob (and wife was Joanna?). Do you have dates for Jacob? What are the birth/death dates for Fanny so I can look her up too? It's a mystery about my grandfather - we don't know who his father is... I did find a document with the name Moses Lippmann on it, and he apparent was a rabbi in Karlsruhe - and took care of another child after the mother died, Abraham Adler.. Sorry it took so long to get back to you!!
