I am researching the family of Elihu and Elizabeth Parr Bates who came to Autauga County, Alabama from Richland, South Carolina around 1860. Their children were Emma Louisa, William Jefferson, Whiteford Smith, Alonzo Wiggins, Austin Benjamin, Oscar Elihu Randolf, Theodore, Alice Minerva, Jessie Eugenia, and Whitford. Emma Louisa and her sister Alice married two brothers: Thomas Taylor and George Washington Taylor respectively. Emma also married Reuben Joshua Bishop. Alonzo Wiggins Bates became sheriff of Bibb County, Alabama. If you have any information about this family I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

I know that Emma Bates is the ancestor of Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Taylor Johnson. I am primarily interested in the Taylor connection. For many years I believed that Emma's husband, Thomas, was the son of my gggrandfather, James Taylor's brother, Sanford Taylor. Recent information received indicates Thomas' father's name was William Langston Taylor. However, he could be another brother or at least a cousin. I am searching for the parents or known siblings of my gggrandfather, James Taylor, born in Georgia in 1816, and his brother, Edward Taylor, born in Alabama in 1817. It is thought they also had brothers named Franklin, Sanford, George, and Armstead. If you know of a connection, please advise by E-mail. Thanks, Charles Taylor

Charles,
My greatgrandfather was Reuben Joshua Bishop and as you may know Emma Bates was married to Thomas J. Taylor prior to R. J. Bishop. I'm currently researching my grandfathers childhood days in Autauga County with the combined Taylor family. Have you found any info about the families in the 1880 timeframe? Tom

The Thomas Jefferson Taylor of Autauga County who married Emma Bates in 1867 (he d. 1874) was son of William Lancaster Taylor and Sarah Shaffer. Emma actually had four husbands, outliving the first 3. My book, "Taylor and Shaffer Ancestors," lists the descendants of William and Sarah Taylor, and the James to which you refer was not one of them. He did not have a brother Sanford or Edward. William Lancaster Taylor was born 1815 Tennessee and came to Autauga County in the 1820s with his parents. I hope this helps. If you live in Alabama, the book is at the state archives, as well as at the Autauga Heritage library in Prattville. Good luck, Joe Hammer, Austin, Texas.

Walt,
My family has always believed that there was a Taylor connection to Lady Bird Taylor Johnson. I know her ancestor was William Langston Taylor who would have been a generational peer of my gggrandfather, James A. Taylor born in Georgia in 1816. His four known brothers were Sanford, 1811 GA, Armstead 1815 GA, Edward 1817 AL, George Franklin "Frank" 1820 AL. Two other possible brothers were Elijah 1809 GA and William 1823 AL. They were all married in Monroe County, Alabama. A possible father was a George Taylor for whom Sanford and Elijah were required to post bond to administer his estate in Orphan's Court in Monroe County, AL in Feb 1837. Possibly this George was a another brother to the father of William Langston Taylor of Autauga County. Do you know who his parents were or can you shed some further light on this?

Thanks,
Charles
