Can anyone tell me why there are no Virginia State census records for 1790 and 1800? How does one trace their family back beyond the 1810 census??? I use a paid internet genealogy website to view census records. Thanks, Janette

I ran into this problem when I first started; I finally made a conclusion [may or maynot be right] that for the Blueridge areas and north/west of there you need to search PENNSYLVANIA, OHIO, AND KENTUCKY in the 1800 and sometimes the 1790. Some areas were classified by the "??" as being counties and not in the "state" as we view it today. Kentucky was a Virginia County before it was a state. Confusing!

Try to find some maps on the Land Grants by the Ohio Company, the Penn Grant and such and perhaps you might get a better view of the areas around your search. It helped me quite a bit.
Regards,
Linda

Happy to help. Virginia is a most interesting and painful study because of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War; loses of lives, records, family against family.

Some of the old maps I've seen show Botetourt County going all the way over to the Ohio River. When those areas became states the records were sometimes put in the county in which they were relevant to under new county names and new state names. You need to look at an old map then look at a current one and decide what county comes closest to the area your looking for. Also to save time you can check state records. Virginia was parent to KY, OH, Tn. I've even found some records listed under different town names than what they are now. It is hard work but well worth it when you can locate the people your looking for. Good luck,
Phyllis

Wow! A benefit of family history is learning your country's history. I wasn't much for it in school, but I love it now. Thank you for your help and insights. Sincerely, Janette

I am looking for a Samuel Baker b. July 18, 1771 in Bedford county, Virginia. He married a Elizabeth Trent on March 29, 1796 in Bedford County, Virginia. They had nine children. Their oldest was my ggggrandfather, Elijah Baker b. July 11, 1798 in Augusta county, VA. I found both Samuel and Elijah in the 1810 census on Pg. 610; Botetourt county, Virginia US Census. I am trying to trace them to 1800 and 1790. Any help would be appreciated. There is an oral family tradition the "family" came from Ireland. I am not sure if this is true. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much. Janette

There are no records for Virginia for those years because they were destroyed by fire. There are online the Virginia Tax lists for those years which can serve as a substitute. Unfortunately, that link is coming up dead as of right now. If I can find a working link I'll post as follow up.
