Article #378 DR. HOMER HEAD
Dr. Homer Head was a native of Lumpkin county, born October 4, 1868. He was a member of a pioneer family of North Georgia. According to family letters and records this Head family came from England, landing at York Town, Virginia and later settling up the James River. Dr. Homer Head is descended from this Head family.
We know that James Head, who migrated from South Carolina to Hall County and settled in the part of the county that later became Lumpkin County, was Dr. Head's great-grandfather. He was killed building a log house. A log slipped and rolled over him. He was buried in the old Wahoo
The James Head family is in the Hall County Census of 1820. James and his wife had four boys: Charles, Richard, Isaac and James, and two girls: Alsey and Patsy. It is interesting to note that two brothers of this family married two sisters of the Clemeth Cavender family. Charles Head married Betsy Cavender in 1818 and Isaac Head married Kitty
Cavender in 1820.
Clemeth Cavender, the father of these two girls was a French Huguenot and their mother was Rebecca Deadman from Scotland.
Isaac and Kitty Cavender Head's children were: Clemeth married Lavada Ferguson, Watt married Sallie Everett, Rebecca married Jim Barrett and after his death William Avery, Marion married Amanda Pierce, Polk married Missouri Jones, Vashti married John Cain, Susie married John
Rider, Nancy married Arch Wimpy, and Caroline married Taylor Wimpy.
It is thought that the Heads and Cavenders traveled together from South Carolina and settled near each other in the Wahoo community. Indians were living in this area when they arrived.
Dr. Head's parents were Clemeth (Clem) and Lavada Ferguson. Lavada died in 1900. They lived about three miles north of Dahlonega in the Yahoola District. His brothers and sisters were Walter, Colquitt, Andrew, Coleman, Gordon, Anderson, Caroline, and Sara Ann.
