I am trying to ascertain what happened to those graves that were on the land that is now Smith Mountain Lake. I heard they were relocated. Does anyone know about this?

Also, has anyone heard of Rough and Ready Mill?

I can't remember where I saw it, but I believe the power company (Appalachian?) made a map showing where the cemeteries were.

In the case of the older Philpott Reservoir, some where re-located and some were not.

Perhaps someone else has more knowledge of this.

The graves were relocated to various areas in Franklin, Bedford, and Pittsylvania County. The Franklin Library has "plats" in a book giving various locations. Call 540-483-3098 and ask for Diane Hayes.

My GGGrandfather lived on the Bedford side of Smith Mountain Lake right on the river. His name John Brown Turner. He was a Methodist and his grave was moved to Mt. Patmos Church in Bedford County.
