Hi,

I found the Martinez Family Tree which has her parents and husband.

1940 South Starkville, Las Animas, CO
Atillena Lujan, head, widow, b. NM, 59, direct relief, education=high school 2 yrs
Eugenia Leyba, dau, b. CO, 35, no schooling
Esther Leyba, granddau, b. CO, 14
Mary Leyba, graddau, b. Co, 10
William Leyba, grandson, b. NM, 7
Jesus Leyba, grandson, b. CO, 1

Atilana G. Lujan
Born: 1881
Died: 1962
Buried: Valley View Cemetery, Rocky Ford, Otero, CO
Source: www.findagrave.com. There is a pic of her tombstone too.

You'll need her full death date to find/order a copy of her obituary. You might be able to get that info from local Catholic Church were she died. You can order a copy of her death certificate from the Colorado Dept. Public Health & Environment. Successful Searching!

Hi

Send me an email to judyartley2@gmail.com and I'll forward it to the owner of the Martinez Family Tree. Also most larger public libraries provide free access to Ancestry if you have a local library card.

There are a few posted family trees besides the Martinez one. I sent a message to the owner of the Martinez tree to read this thread. Based on the limited information and conflicting information in these trees, as in a large number, there are errors made and they continue to show up as people copy the wrong information to their own data.

A posted family tree shows Atilana Gonzales (with a photo) born in 1881 to Teodoro Gonzales born 1870 in New Mexico Territory and Berseve Bertha Romero, born 1885 in New Mexico. She married Celso Lujan and had a daughter Eugenia
--another tree shows her parents as Ferdando Andres Gonzales and Pelegrina De Aguero.

So who are her real parents anyway? so what did the owner of the Martinez tree have to say about the information that I asked about, since you emailed her about my information that I asked about?

The "email" was a contact email through the Ancestry system from their posted family tree. They will have to go onto the Ancestry.com or the Rootsweb system to see they have a message. They then will go to this thread to see your inquiry and answers. They may respond here or not. Based on the trees I've seen, there is a question as to who her parents really were.

I am not related, only do this as a volunteer to help and also prevent people from receiving the WRONG information.

The Belinda Gomez58 family tree for the Ruiz family:
Eugenia Lujan born in Trinidad, Las Animas County, CO, died 1960 at Rocky Ford, identifies her parents a Celso Lujan (no further information, NFI) and Atilana Gonzales, NFI.
--I find only one family tree for a Celso Luzan, born 1869 in El Llano, Taos, New Mexico, died after the 1880 census, no date known. I only find two graves for a Celso Luan, both to young to be the father.
--The 1900 Census of Canon Largo, San Miguel, New Mexico has an interesting family:
Lujan, N. Celso, born July 1868 (31) in NM
De Aguero, Ma (the a is written higher to the right of the M) Tilana, born May 1881 in NM, mother of 4/1 living
Lujan, Antonio Fren (the en is written higher to the right of the Fr), born July 1899.
--could this "Tilana" be Atilana? Purely speculation.

The 1930 Census of Morley, Las Animas County, Colorado
Roberto Leyba, age 36, born in Mexico, immigrated 1916
Eugenia, age 25(1904/1905), born in Colorado, first married age 20 (1924/1925), both parents born in Mexico.
Ester, dau, age 4.

I did a good number of varied searches for this family. I had hoped to find Atilana listed in the Social Security Death Index, showing her SSN. Then you could obtain her application for her SSN which would show the persons she identified as her parents, who she may have been married, her full DOB, where she was living at the time of her application. You could request a search for it without knowing the number, but it would cost more; and, she may never have had one. I couldn't find an SSN for Eugenia either, again the application would show who she knew as her parents.

The obituary, if one was written, might provide some answers for her. Her Death Certificate would provide whatever information the "Informant" knew about her. Since Eugenia died before her, the Informant might not have known her parents. Eugenia's obit and death certificate might identify her parents, again from the Informant. Atilana "might" have been the Informant and if so, would know Eugenia's father's name.

I would probably start first with the cemetery where Atilana is buried:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=lu...;
and Eugenia:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=le...;
It is in Rocky Ford, but no contact info is on the findagrave site, but this site shows the address and phone number:
http://www.yellowpages.com/rocky-ford-co/cemeteries
--I would write (or call) and ask what information they may have on both persons. They "could" have the burial permit showing the funeral home, possibly the death certificate, possibly the obit. If you can identify the funeral home, contact them, if still in business. If not check their business address, sometimes the records are retained by the new business owners. The cemetery contact "might" be able to give you info on that.

If the Death Certificates are found and they have their SSN numbers, try to get their applications:
http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ssa-711.pdf
It will cost $27.00 if SSN is known, $29.00 if not.

The Otero County Recorder and Assessor:
http://publicrecords.netronline.com/state/CO/county/otero/
I would write/call the Otero County Recorder to see what documents may have been recorded on both women. "Sometimes" the death certificate is recorded, property records would be recorded, power-of-attorney, etc. The property records "might" show the name of husband of Atilana.
The Assessor site has a database system that shows current owners names, both Lujan and Leyba own property there now.
You can also find their contact info via www.zabasearch.com

Since Eugenia was identified as having been born in Las Animas County, and were there at the 1940 Census, there might be records there also.
http://publicrecords.netronline.com/state/CO/county/las_anim...
The 1930 Census of Morley, Las Animas Co, CO
"Atelana" Lujan, age 48, born in New Mexico, Divorced, first married age 14, renting and had four boarders. She was a maid.
