I'm another English Gange trying to find out where we came from. The earliest reliable mention of the Gange family I have found was in the Norway Post. Apparently the Ganges used to be one of Norway's most powerful families; their most well known member, Rolv or Rollo was from the Island of Giske or Vigra. Rolv apparently conquered Normandie in 911 and became an ancestor of William the conqueror. So the French connection isn't too misleading, although the family archives in Chester give two accounts of where our name originated, both of which are German.
Good luck, David Gange.

I have a Anne Rebbecca Gange as an ancester. Born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England on 11 May 1874. Her Father Charles Pippard Gange & mother Matilida Taylor. Anne married William Lee Putman.

I know little else, but would like to have more data.

Thank you for the e_mail message of earlier in the year, re. the family name Gange.
I was interested to hear of the early Norwegian connection as previously I had been directed to the South of France or Germany as the source of the name.
The town of Ganges in France was advised on radio phone as a likely source of the name Gange particulary as there are most Ganges in the UK on the South coast and Cornwall and this was suggested as being a likely outcome of the French Revolution.
But I don't know?.

Alison, and David Gange,

With all due respect, you may be barking up the wrong tree. If both of your families are of England then it is unlikely that you descend from Marquis de Ganges. Visit my website (address you will have to type in order to get there)http://www3.nb.sympatico.ca/guissem/
I would suggest tracing your tree as far back as possible. This will give you some idea of where your ancestors came from.

I am not an expert but do have thirty years or more of research on this subject. In addition have published a number of works on the subject.

Sincerely,
Marilyn Shaw-Guisset (guissem@nb.sympatico.ca)
