What GABEL names do you have? Dates? I am a direct descendant of GABEL's from St. Louis, MO and also St. Clair County,IL. I have yet to run across another Gabel Family from St. Louis, although there is one contact I do have, that I haven't made a link with yet that is a Gabel from St. Louis, these may be yours. Let me know what other names you have in your surname list and I will see if there is a link and more info for you.

My great-grandfather, Francis Eugene Gabel lived at least for a time in Onarga, Cook Co., Illinois. He had two sons: Victor Newlan born in 1889 in Onarga and Vivien Francis born in 1892 in Ridgefield, Illinois. Francis was married to Nancy Ann Galloway. I know nothing else about my Gabel ancestors and would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you!

Cook Co website?
~ilcook/index.htm ? I don't believe they
are related, but could be if he ends up having PA roots...mine originated in Phil.,
and before that Germany. My email is Good luck to you,

From my research(I have been on sabbatical from this stuff for a few months), there are three distinct Gabel groups in Illinois. One from Chicago area(Cook Co.), one from Rock Island area, and one from St. Clair Co.(Belleville, Swansea area). My group being the latter.

I believe, the first two groups migrated from Pennsylvania. My group....well who knows, my guess, big guess, is they came up river from New Orleans after coming here from Germany. I'm stuck here at this point but still trying to find the route they took.
Hope this helps everyone.

My grandfather, Clayton E. Gabel and his wife, Alice Hollister Gabel lived in Rock Island. They were missionaries in South India for several years. My father, John F. Gabel, born 11/1/13 in Kolar, India; my uncle Richard, born 1915 Oarkland, California and my Aunt, Helen, born 1921 in Gulbarga, India. Clayton worked for the Army Corps of Egineers on the Mississippi, lived to age 91, died in 1974.

He descended from Pennsyvania Gabels (Gabelstown) but I have not found his direct descendent yet.
