João Fernandes Camacho and Maria Augusta da Silva were wed in Santo António, Madeira on November 5, 1875. Their first son, Paul Fernandes Camacho (m - Leonor Guilhermina de Ornelas), did not accompany family to the Sandwich Islands. Second son, José, died shortly after birth, in Santo Antonio. This family initially was assigned to the Kohala Sugar Plantation on the island of Hawaii and eventually became contributing members of the Oahuan sugar industry in various locales. Only Clemente left the islands for the Bay Area where his immediate kin prospered. Maria Augusta was the daughter of Manuel Pinto da Silva and Sophia Augusta de Jesus (nee: Gomes da Silva). João Fenandes Camacho was the greatgrandfather of Rear Admiral Richard George Camacho, formerly commanding officer of the Pearl Harbor Naval Base Facility.

Joao Fernandes,Camacho and his wife Maria Augusta da Silva came to Hawaii on the Ravenscrag. They first worked at Kohala Sugar on the Island of Hawaii and later moved to Oahu working at Wailua Sugar. Children of Joao and Maria born in Hawaii included John, Manuel, Clemente, Joaquin, Maria Sophia and Frank. My grandfather Manuel Fernandes Camacho married Annie de Jesus whose family had also come to Hawaii on Ravenscrag. Both Manuel and Annie were born in Kohala and moved to Oahu with their families. Manuel worked at Wailua Sugar for many years becoming Head Luna about the time I was born. John, Mary, George, Bill, and Edward were children of Manuel and Annie. My father George left the plantation to become an apprentice machinist at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. Fifty three years later, I returned to Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard as its Commander and was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral. The voyage from Maderira was long and the work we found was hard, but the adventure continues.

Aloha, Richard...
Yes, we are cousins as Maria Augusta da Silva is my greatgrand aunt. Her brother, João Pinto da Silva, also arrived in 1879, my greatgrandfather. Both families originated from Santo
António, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal and while your family be-gan their Hawaiian adventure in Kohala, mine settled on the island of Kaua'i. Today their ancestors are scattered to the
Four Winds...making for a very interesting ancestral trek...
searching for one's "antepassados".

Hi Ron, Glad to see your update. It looks like your great grandfather Joao Pinto da Silva might have traveled to Hawaii on the ship Ravenscrag along with my paternal great grandparents Joao and Maria Augusta and Manuel Pereira de Jesus and his wife Henriqueta. My maternal great grandmother Amelia Augusta Pereira, and her young son Joao were also on the ship. Amelia met and married my great grandfather Manuel Goularte Silva on Oahu and moved to Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii and grew coffee, cattle and lots of children. Manuel and Henriqueta went on to Kohala with Joao and Maria. We now live and work in Virginia, but plan to return to Hawaii this summer for a visit. While there I will do more ressearch on the family. I hope to someday get to meet some of your side of the family.. Aloha, Dick
