Archibald Arena MARTIN was born in London, England in 1883 to William MARTIN and Louisa WARD MARTIN. His mother died when he was young. He appears in Victoria, Bendigo, Australia in 1924. Several of his mother's family members ended up in the USA and others stayed in London. It appears that her family lost track of him. He would be my grandmother's cousin. I would love to know what happened to him, and to know of his family and life!

It looks like this is my guy! I've never researched in Australia. I Googled "trove newspapers" but didn't see a notice about his estate...but I might not have done it correctly. Any more suggestions?

Trove also has his death and funeral notices, with slightly different spelling:

The Argus, Thursday 27 January 1955
MARTIN. - On January 25, at his home, Chipping, Wonga road, Ringwood, Archibald Arene, aged 71 years.

MARTIN. - A Memorial Service for the late ARCHIBALD ARENE MARTIN will be held at the Bathurst memorial chapel, cnr. Glenhuntly and Kooyong roads, Elsternwick, TODAY (Thursday), at 2p.m. The private Funeral will leave the chapel at the conclusion of the service, for the Spring Vale Crematorium.

With him is Winifred Katherine MARTIN, who died in June 1952.

The Argus, Monday 9 June 1952
MARTIN. —On June 7, at her home, Chipping, Wonga road, Ringwood, Winifred Catherine, aged 73 years.

No children are mentioned in either notice but then again neither are spouses!

The death reg confirms Archibald's parents as Wm & Louisa (nee WARD), reg 1865 - this certificate would reveal when and where he married and any children he had (living or decd). You can order an uncertified image online and download as a pdf for about A$18.

Winifred's parents were George Lucas WRIGHT and Mary LAMBE (death reg 19458).

Aha! Just found this:

The Argus, Friday 2 January 1942
CLOSE—MARTIN.—Mary, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Martin, Chipping, Ringwood, to Frank Close, of Rawong, Malaya, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Close, Bellvue Hill, Sydney.

I suspect this may be his WWII enlistment, with wife Mary as his next of kin:
CLOSE FRANK ARCHIBALD : Service Number - NX173622 : Date of birth - 16 Jun 1914 : Place of birth - SYDNEY NSW : Place of enlistment - Unknown : Next of Kin - CLOSE MARY

I think his father is most likely Archibald Freebairn CLOSE who died in July 1950 in Sans Souci NSW, as husband of Clare and father of Frank and Ian.

Oh my!! You guys are wonderful! Louisa Ward Martin was my grandmother's aunt! I would love to know how exactly to get this document for my records. Where do I have to go to download this? I wonder if this Mary is still alive??

I'm thrilled to know that Archibald Arena Martin knew his mother's name. Sometimes that info gets lost when the mother dies when the child is young (he was 6 years old). I would love to know if there area any stories that were passed down.

Thanks so much! If you find more, I'd love to see it!!
