I've been trying to find out where the orphanages would be located in Idaho after 1885, til about 1908....

I would like to know which Idaho orphanage the two GRINER girls lived in....the sisters' names are Sarah Margaret "Maggie" & Elizabeth "Lizzie" GRINER - GRINNER, d/o Samuel Josiah GRINER -GRINNER......Maggie was born about 1885 in Washington Territory....

I would also like to know if I can learn anything more about their parents/family from any records available at the orphanage where they were living up til the time they each got married....

The info I have is from Maggie's marriage record & death cert....I'm hoping someone reading this can help me learn more about my great-grandmother, and her family....

Thank you....

Here's a citation of a directory :

UNITED STATES. Census, Bureau of the. "Benevolent Institutions, 1904." [Washington, D.C.: Govt. Print. Off.], 1905. 335 p.

Idaho didn't publish many directories that I know of. The best research, I think, would be the federal census of 1900. It's indexed by the Soundex system. 99% of the 1890 federal census was destroyed by fire, and Idaho did not conduct any state censuses.

A census would include the inmates of any institution.

As far as finding old records of orphanages, don't be too optimistic. But check a state or county historical society, in case one of them inherited the records you seek.

I found your great grandmother and her sister listed in the 1900 Denver County Idaho Census. They are listed as wards of the Henry VanBargen family. Elizabeth was born April 1884 and Maggie was born March 1886, both in Washington. Their parents were listed as being born in Missouri. Both girls were in school, so seems they were in the house as foster children and not employed by the family.
