I'm not sure if we are searching for the same name or not, but my great grandmother Anna Blazevic's parents names were Blazevic and Vucic, I'm not sure if I have the spelling right of Vucic. They were Croatian. And lived I believe in Vrbosko in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Perhaps we are talking of he same last name? What do you think?

I am not an expert at names. I understand that Vuksic means "son of Wolf" or some
Croatian variant. I.e. Johnson meaning John's son.
Our surname Mothkovich was originally Matkovic,, until people forced my father
to "Americanize it" when he was a boy. given the common mis-spelling by immigration clerks,
people who couldn't spell.. etc., I wouldn't discount the possibility at this point.
Sorry I took so long to reply.. I must've missed my notice from the server.
David.

It seems like Vuksic is the croatian spelling of Vucic, is this true?
What is the american way of spelling Matkovic? Thats neat, son of Wolf. this "ic" must mean son of then? Thanks for any help!

Matkovic is normally spelled the same, however some families added an "h" to the end
so that it would be properly pronounced with the ch sound as in Church, not the hard c sound as in
Spic n span. I'm not sure if Vucic and Vuksic are the same, but they are very close in spelling.
I have also seen vukelic, so there are some variations which I am uncertain of.

There is some interesting history about some vuksic.

I live in Croatia and as far as i know the names given to the families in the old times had more to do with a nature of ones doing than with the real name, so having the same last name as someone with whom you had no common ancesters is not considered to be strange. But more important than that: besides the first name a nick name and a last name there is a familly name wich is the most important. It would be like this your name is Ante,
your nickname is Moli(Small one),
Last name is Vucetic
and a familly name is Stane.
Familly names are ussualy given after the fathers nickname, wich was sometimes a derivate of his real name: Like this; My name is Mato but peple call me Mote so my familly name would be Motetov meaning Motes.
Complicated enough?
Hold on.
Several hundred years ago when people lived in the dark ages mother who would give birth to a stillborn child would name their next child Vuk (the wolf) so that: "The witches could not throw a spell `cause they are afraid of his roar in the night and theath in the moonlight, and a werewolf wouldn`t harm him either for he will think that the wolf is one of his children".
So after the unfortunate guy grew up in a vilage (or wherever) where peple wasted time thinking about the witches and the werewolfs
his his familly name would be (is some cases)
Vuk-something.
Different versions of the last names that begin vith Vuk:
Vukshich
Vukashinovich
Vuchetich
Vukovich
Vukas
Vukich...

Hope i helped a bit.

Hi, I read your message on "Vuk". I have relatives in Croatia with the surnames of Vukich and of Saulovich. Any ideas on how I could search and find my family and ancestors? Any help or suggestions would be helpful, Thanks, J. Pettifer
