Ravelette/Lovellette/Tougas dit Laviolette

I've been researching the Tougas dit Laviolette family and found that some Tougas (various spellings) remain in IN and also that Laviolette crystalized into "Lovellette" (various spellings) in Wabash County, IL. However, in Knox Co., IN where the French Canadian settlers were, I've found a few Ravelette (various spellings) names entered into the St. Francis Xavier Church records. Some are entered into those records AND also Knox Co. Court records as BOTH Ravelettes and Laviolettes. So, I assumed they were the same family. However, there is at least one marriage record of a Tougas dit Laviolette marrying a Ravelette. CONFUSING! Does anyone know for a certainty if the Ravelettes and the Tougas dit Laviolettes (which some later became Lovellettes) were one and the same family? Would appreciate any info. Thanks! I will be checking this site often or I can be reached at

Ginger: I have a Margaret Ravelette m Joseph Tougas Mar 10 1851 St Francisville IN. They were the parents of my husbands grandfather Anthony Joseph Tougas. Margaret's parents were Louis Ravelette & Helene Campeau m Oct 01 1810 There were 4 brothers who went by the name Tougas de Laviolette in IN. Two took the name Tougas and two the name Laviolette.

Bobby - Thanks for responding! Since I posted the first message, I've found lots of info. As you do, I show a Louis Ravelette mar. to Helene Campeau on Oct. 1, 1810. The Saint Francis Xavier Church Record books for Knox Co., IN lists several children of theirs with the last name spelled various ways of Ravelette. But it also shows they had a son, Francois LAVALLETTE, b. 7-10-1824 and bpt. 8-8-1824 stating he was the s/o Louis Lavallette & Helene Campo or Campeau. Who were Margaret's siblings? The first record I have of the Ravalet name in Knox Co., IN is 1767 where Jean Baptiste Ravalet mar. Marie Francoise Favel (Sovele). The Ravelet name seems to have disappeared around 1833 after Benjamin Ravalette was b. 4-21-1833. The first Tougas I can find in Vincennes, IN was 1773. I'm finding that the Tougas family was not the only French family that had the Laviolette nickname in Knox Co., IN. To add to the confusion, I've found at least one Ravalet dit Bouissard. I have more info re the Ravalettes if you'd like to discuss offline. My address is: Thanks again!

Hi Linda (Lovellette) Cunningham. Thanks for clearing up the mystery re whether the Ravalettes and the Lovellettes were the same original families. So, they aren't. Glad to finally get that question answered. Which line of Lovellettes do you descend from? Were you born in Knox County? You may email me direct if you'd like at Thanks again!
