My mother's maiden name is Moniuszko. Her father, Kazimierz, came from near Bialystok, Poland. In the eastern part near the present Russian (Ukranian?) border. He first immigrated to Canada. He came to the U.S. via Chicago, eventually settling near Scranton, PA. All this prior to WWI. He married the former Anna Lencheski/Lenczewski in 1920. Raised 4 children, a boy, George, and 3 girls, Charlotte, Bernice and Phyllis.

My husband's grandfather was born in Russia/
Poland, possibly GOLICE in SIEDICE. His last
place of residence before leaving for U.S. was
DOWNARY (N.E. of WARSAW). He left on MARCH 23,
1909 aboard the WITTEKIND from BREMEN and per
the manifest travelled with a brother IGNACY.
They left another brother...either THOMAS or
JOSEPH (manifest difficult to read). We know
nothing of the brother he travelled with but
ALEXANDER wound up in JAMAICA, QUEENS, NY and
married PAULINA GRZYMALA from DOBRY LAS. He
died in the flu epidemic of 1918. Manifest lists
him as 18 (in 1909)...his gravestone says he
was 37 when he died.

We will be visiting Poland next May so I am
trying to gather as much information as I can
beforehand. Any connection? Please let me
know. My email is: wheelwinner@mindspring.com

My great-grandfather was named Simon Moniuszko. I believe (but am not sure) that he was the son of Kazimierz Moniuszko. Kazimierz Moniuszko was the son of Stanislaw Moniuszko, the Polish composer. Simon settled outside of Scranton, PA. Simon married Martha Bartnyk(sp?). Simon and Martha had 5 children: Betty, Mary, Anthony, John in 1905 and Joseph in 1908. Joseph was my grandfather.

Pam,
I'm sorry to say that if there is a link between the Moniuszkos you know and the Moniuszkos I know, it must be a long one.
Every since my mother learned of the Polish composer, Stanislaw Moniuszko, we've often wondered.

My maternal grandfather was named Kazimierz.
His date of birth was March 4, 1893. His siblings were named Joseph, Mary, Alexandra and Karolina. His father's name was Michael, and his father's name was Xavier. My maternal grandfather was originally from in Poland is named Moniuczecki (sic), near Monki, near the city of Bialystok in extreme eastern Poland.

My mom is originally from the town of Moosic, PA., near a local area called Stark's Patch. What is the town name for your Moniuszkos?
