My birth mothers maiden name is Edith Marie Lingar. I can remember my grandfathers name and that was Raymond Marvin Lingar. And I can remember both him and my grandmother died because of a form of cancer. I know that my mother was not an only child. She had siblings. Iwould love to meet any of them , if they are still alive.

MY GRANDMOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME WAS LINGAR AND BOTH OF HER PARENTS DIED WHEN SHE WAS JUST A SMALL CHILD. SHE WAS RAISED IN TENNESSEE AND I ONLY KNOW OF ONE BROTHER NAMED VERNIE WHO NEVER MARRIED. MY GRANDMOTHER'S GIVEN NAME WAS DICIE AND SHE WAS BORN AROUND 1889. SHE AND HER OLDER BROTHER WERE SPLIT UP AND SHE WAS RAISED BY ANOTHER FAMILY. I WISH I KNEW MORE ABOUT HER FAMILY. I DO KNOW THAT EITHER HER MOTHER'S OR GRANDMOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME WAS CHUMLEY AND THAT SHE WAS A FULL BLOODED CHEROKEE INDIAN. IF THERE IS A POSSIBILITY WE MIGHT BE RELATED, PLEASE SEND A MESSAGE.
THANKS. SANDIE

Hello, Penny! I'm at least 98% sure we are related. There couldn't be that many Dicie and Vernie Lingar's in that area at that time. I would love to know more. Thank you so much for contacting me! I'm so excited! Hope to hear from you again soon. Sandie

Cyndi Galati and I just returned from E. TN (Claiborne Co) after searching for the land that John Lingar settled on near Cumberland Gap, on Lonesome Valley Rd. It was a fine experience being right there where your John, brother of my grgrgrandmother Sarah Lingar Goodman, lived. There is one Linger descendant who purchased some of John Sr.'s land and is clearing it. Beautiful, but not conducive to farming, I think. My ancestors left about 1834 for MO. We only know John, Sr.'s military records state he came from N.C.

Leslie,
I reread my response to you and saw that I had a big typo....I meant that my grgrgrandma, Sarah Lyngar/Linger, moved with grgrgrampa Sampson Goodman to Polk Co. MO in abt. 1843/4 not 1834. Sampson can be found on the Claiborne Co., TN 1840 census, and his family were still there. John/Jack Lingar married and stayed in Claiborne on the Linger land, but younger brother Harvey Lingar followed Sampson and Sarah to MO. Have you found where in NC father John/Jack Lingar/Linger lived and left from in NC? Have you followed the CHUMBLEY-L@rootsweb mailing list where the family is discussed?

Penny, Punched the wrong button the first message, sorry. I am related to both the Lyngar and Chumbley lines. I descend from John Jack Lyngar's sister, Sarah m. Sampson Goodman. Then Mary Elizabeth Goodman m. Samuel C. Chumbley, then Florence May Chumbley m. Abraham Zinn, my Grandmother was Cleo Mary Zinn m. Darius Short, my father is Lawrence Short m. Marie Young. You posted a message saying your grandfather told you he was one-quarter Indian. Was his name Charles H. Chumbley? Tell me how you descend and maybe we can come up with some answers. Thankyou. LaRita
