I have family, I think, in the same area
My town is Barbageleta that is being searched for the marriage record of the parents of Guiseppe Garbarino of 1850. He came to Am. in 1864 and remained here without family of the old country. He landed in CA and came to AZ to settle.Montebruno is only a short distance from Barbageleta. I have a friend that has family in Montebruno also. Not Garbarinos however.

My Grandparents came from Genoa. My Grandmothers maiden name was Ferrara.
My Grandfather was born on a ship bound for the US. His family ultimately settled
in CA also. Then returned to Italy via NY. I have heard that some of his family fought
in the Civil WAR (for the south) having been drafted while pass through Louisiana or Texas
on their way to NY. Has anybody else heard of anyhting like this?

I can tell you that both my great great grandfather and his brother (James and Nicholas Garbarino) fought in the Civil War for the South. James settled in Elton, Louisiana and Nicholas settled in St Martinville, Louisiana. According to old records Nicholas was taken prisoner at Vicksburg and paroled home. He served in I think the 4th Louisiana Regiment. I can verify this for you if you wish. My e-mail address is

I have managed to find out that my Great Great Grandfather (Steven), while on his way from
San Francisco, stopped to visit his brother in LA. While there, his brother
was drafted and they tried to draft Steven, but did not. From what I understand,
Steven stayed in LA with his brothers family while his brother was in the war.
I understand that his brother was killed in action and never returned.
My uncle has also told me that the Garbarino family traveled back and forth from the US to
Italy many times during the 1800's. Does anyone have any information on relatives who remained
