The early Emans/Emmons/Emmans family is traced fairly well in "An Emmons Genealogy" by Corwin Wilbur Emmons. Although it is out of print, many genealogy libraries have a copy.
Per this book, Geertje married Weynant (Janse) Bennet about 1740. He was the son of Jan Willemse Bennet and Alice Weynants Van Eyk. Weynant died before 1770. The book shows 3 children; Christopher, Weynant Joost, and Elizabeth.
This book shows Geertje (Geertie) as being the daughter of Jacobus Emans and his wife Geertje Romeyn, thier being married on May 10, 1700.
Jacobus is one of 8 children born to Jan (John) Emans. Jan's first wife was Sarah Jansen, and he later married Engeltie ____, but it is believed that all but the last child (Cornelia) were by Sarah. Jan is shown in a land grant in Gravesend, Long Island in 1645, but it is believed that he had been in North America for some time before that.
I hope this helps.

Jan Emans's second wife was Engeltje Van Salee, daughter of Anthony Van Salee. You will find a very interesting overview of the American Van Salee family at

After reviewing the many postings about these women, I'm not convinced that they are not one and the same person. David Conover ( gives Sarah's death as 1715 in NY. Others show Sarah as an Anglicized version of the Dutch Engeltje. No one has posted an authority for a second marriage for Jan Emans. Furthermore, if these names are for the same person, then Sarah was a daughter of Anthony Van Salee and Grietje Reyniers.

Sarah, married to Jan Emans were my ancestors She was the daughter of Grietje Reiners and Anthony Jansen Van Salee
A vast amount of records were destroyed in a fire in 1911 at the State of New York Library that had two hundred thousand volumes of records including records about this family.
A previous descendant looked into this and was told in 1924.
I'd like to find out who got their land.

This was entered into the town records at the time that John Emans was the town clerk.

Bergen transcribed the date as March 4, 1701 when he published his abstract of the marriage records found scattered through out the town records. See Tunis G. Bergen, "Marriage Reocrds, Gravesend, L. I.," New York Genealogical and Biographical Record Vol. 4 (1873): 199-200.
